The X
is a music festival held annually in Germany at which performances of op
eras by he 19th century German composerY are presented.
Y himself conceived and promoted the idea of a special festival to showc
ase his own works
Performances take place in a specially designed theatre. Y personally
supervised the design and construction of the theatre, which contained
many architectural innovations to
accommodate the huge orchestras for whichY wrote as well as the comp
oser's particular vision about the staging of his works.
During the war, the festival was turned over to the Nazi Party, which cont
inued to sponsor operas for wounded soldiers returning from the front.T
hese soldiers
were forced to attend lectures onY before the performances, and most f
ound the festival to be tedious. However, as “guests of the Führer”, none
complained.

:Ancient
X was a form of execution that allegedly occurred in Nantes during
the Reign ofTerror in Revolutionary France and "involved tying a n
aked man and woman together and drowning them".
The use of the term appears to be a mockery of the concept of X a
s an actual "secular" marriage. Books describe parents horrified to
learn
that their children planned a X instead of being married in a church
.

Ancient
The word X is drawn from the French language. In printing, X
was the sound a printing plate cast
from movable type made when it was used.
When letters were set one
at a time, it made sense to cast a phrase used repeatedly, as a single sl
ug of metal.

Ray Bradbury wrote a 25,000-word novella entitled X which he
later expanded into this 50,000-word novel. He decided to give the
novel a new title and, focusing on book burning, came up with the
idea of using the temperature at which book paper burns. He
called the physics and chemistry departments at several
universities, but no one could pinpoint this temperature. Then,
wondering why he hadn’t thought of it first, he called the local fire
station. The fire chief named the temperature, and Ray Bradbury
had his title: Fahrenheit 451.
