2. Overview
Overweight schoolbags can cause various health hazards among children
Average weight carried by a student to a school to range between 6kg and 10kg.
Internationally, most countries observe norms that limit the weight of school bags to less than one-
seventh of the weight of the student
In India most of the school students carry around 30 percent of their body weight in these school bags
Repeated load on the neck, or cervical area can lead to headache and giddiness
Carrying heavy burden in the form of school bags can turn these children into humpbacks
Children with neurological problems may be a greater risk due to weakness and balance problems
3. Causes
System highly cognitive and textbook driven
Too many subjects in one day in the time table therefore all books have to be carried
Concept of homework makes it worse
Vast syllabus
Reference books recommended so each subject has more than one text book
4. Problem Statement
As concluded from research there is an additional physical burden of heavy bag loads leading to
health problems at early age
Our objective:
Through our project we will eliminate the necessity of carrying heavy loads of text books
which the present education system requires students to do.
6. Design
Digitalize Digitize text books
All subjects will be consolidated into one tablet
The same tablet can contains reference books also
7. Form /Function /Benefit
PaperCut will be a simple tablet, which acts as a digital reader. Each textbook per subject can be stored
directly and accessed. The user will be carrying one tablet instead of a whole set of textbooks.
PaperCut will have the following benefits:
- Easing the heavy burden of books for students
- Consolidating all study material
- Enhance learning by making the curriculum more visually appealing by adding visuals and animations
- Save time by giving the option of searching for the required content or keywords
- Bookmarking , highlighting certain pages or textual content.
- Ecological benefit of saving paper.
- Student can use the same tablet for a number of years.
PaperCut will perform the simple function storing basic text content and delivering it to the reader. Other
functions like storing reference books or notes from the teachers can also be done.
8. Integration into Current Environment
The integration with existing conditions will be seamless as students are computer savvy and exposed to
technology. Children are familiar with most digital interfaces due to increased use of computers, mobile
phones, etc.
Integrating the use of internet with PaperCut will encourage students to refer and research rather than
mug up things. It can also be customized by students to make it appealing visually.
