Irish Water is Ireland’s new national water utility. We are responsible for all of the water and wastewater in the country. All of the water that comes out of your taps is provided by Irish Water and we also deal with all the water that goes down the drain.
Water doesn’t come directly from the sky into our taps. We have to treat if first. Irish Water has over 1,000 plants across the whole country where water is cleaned before it is sent to our taps for us to drink.
All the water that goes down the drain from our showers, sinks and toilets then has to be cleaned again before it’s put back into the sea. Irish Water has another 1,000 plants across the country that treats this water so that it does not harm our environment.
All of this happens in water ‘factories’ across the country
How much money do you think this costs every single year??
Can use a visual aid here of a 500ml bottle of water and let students guess – do you think you use this much water or more? You are actually using 12 of these bottles if you brush your teeth with the tap running.
Ask the class who turns off the tap when brushing your teeth. Show how important this is and how great it is that they are saving so much water every day
You would need 160 of these bottles to have a bath in
You use much less water when you have a quick shower than in the bath
Make sure the dishwasher is full every time you put turn it on.
Saving water is really easy – anyone can do it
Irish Water is working with Green-Schools to help schools to save water. Schools across the country are doing great things to save water. There are young Water Wardens and Leaky Detectives all across Ireland saving water in their schools and at home
You can even win the Irish Water School of the Year Competition for schools that are so creative in saving water; even teaching their parents the best ways to save water.
Schools across the country also got involved in the Irish Water Poster Competition. We got thousands of entries from students who showed great ‘Value Water’ messages and students won great prizes including a new Samsung Tablet!
