3. WHAT IS MOBILE ?
• A mobile phone is an electronic device used to make
mobile telephone calls across a wide geographic
area.
• In addition to being a telephone, modern mobile
phones also support many additional services such
as SMS, e-mail, Internet access, gaming, Bluetooth
and infrared, camera, MMS messaging, MP3 player,
radio and GPS
• First mobile phone was made in 1946 and had a
weight of 40 kg.

A Mobile operating system, also known as a Mobile OS,
a Mobile platform, or a Handheld operating system, is
the operating system that controls a mobile device—
similar in principle to an operating system such as Linux
or Windows that controls a desktop computer or laptop.

Its sounds strange but the fact is that :-
More than 90% of the CPUs in the world are not in
desktops and notebooks.
But in embedded systems like cell phones, PDA’s
,digital cameras, camcorders, game machines,
iPods, Mp3 Players, TV Sets, GPS Receivers and
many more consumer products.

software platform designed for smartphones.
The Symbian platform was created by merging and
integrating software assets contributed by Nokia, NTT
DoCoMo, Sony Ericsson and Symbian Ltd.

It was first announced at Mobile World Congress in
February 2010 by Intel and Nokia.

Linux Foundation that MeeGo will be totally replaced by
Tizen during 2012.
Tizen will be a new free and open source Linux-based
operating-system which itself will be released in the first
quarter of 2012.
