Jean Monnet becomes the first President of
the European Coal and Steel Community. One
of his close aides, Jacques-René Rabier,
follows him to Luxembourg in January 1953.
1989
The Jean Monnet Action is launched and
Emile Noël becomes the first president of the
European University Council for the Jean
Monnet Action.

What is the aim?
• equip students and young professionals with knowledge of
European Union subjects relevant for their academic and
professional lives and enhance their civic skills
•stimulate teaching and research on the European Union
•foster the dialogue between the European Union and the
world at Higher Education world-wide

 Modules: short teaching programme in the field of
European Union studies
 Chairs: teaching posts with a specialisation in EU
studies for university professors or senior lecturers
 Centres of Excellence: focal points of competence
and knowledge on European Union subjects
 Networks and Projects: activities to support
innovation, cross-fertilisation and spread of EU content
 Institutions and Associations: contribute to the study
and dissemination of the EU integration process

Teaching and research
Aims to support:
40h teaching programme in the field of European Union studies
90h teaching post with a specialisation in European Union studies
focal points of competence & knowledge on European Union subjects
Main activities:
- teaching in European integration studies embodied in an official curriculum,
- conduct, monitor and supervise research on EU subjects,
- organise and coordinate human and documentary resources related to European Union studies.
Expected impact:
more than a thousand of Modules and Chairs and 100 Centres of Excellence by the year 2020 and
reach out to more than 2.000.000 students and professional

Policy debate and exchanges
Aims to support:
enhance cooperation and promote results on high level research
explore different methodologies, promote discussion & reflection
Main activities:
- foster the exchange of knowledge and expertise with a view to mutually enhancing good
practices,
- enhance cooperation and create a knowledge exchange platform with public actors and the
Commission services on highly relevant EU subjects,
- development of academic content and tools for specific target groups,
- joint development of content and co-teaching
Expected Impact:
Some 500 Project and more than 20 networks producing new methodologies and tools

Aims to support:
to enhance teacher and training activities on EU subject areas
contributing to the study of the European integration process.
Main activities:
- collect, elaborate analyse and disseminate European Union facts and knowledge
- organise Master level courses on European Union issues or professional advanced training
- organise and carry out statutory activities of associations dealing with European Union studies
- publicize European Union facts among a wider public enhancing active citizenship
Expected impact:
Some 100 Associations will be able to contribute to the EU image

 minimum 90 teaching hours per academic +
 at least one additional activity per academic year
• Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence:
 requirement to hold a Chair removed
• Jean Monnet Networks:
 minimum number of countries for the network is reduced to 3
• No support to Institutions any more
