Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was widely regarded for his leadership in ending apartheid and promoting racial reconciliation. While some leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther practiced non-violence, Mandela initially used sabotage and guerilla warfare against the apartheid regime before adopting non-violence. As a leader, he sacrificed his personal life and spent 27 years in prison for fighting against injustice in South Africa. After his release, he continued to peacefully work to dismantle apartheid and establish a democratic, non-racial government, becoming South Africa's first black head of state in 1994.
