I was born into a family where real estate was the family’s business. And despite my best efforts to avoid the family business (I graduated from Maryland law school, spent 3 years in the US Navy JAG Corps), I returned to Baltimore in 1977 and started my real estate career in property management. The great thing about starting off in property management was learning who cut specifications to meet budget requirements (developers), who “overstated conditions and tenant improvement allowances to make deals” (leasing), and who had to sort out the mess – property managers.
