3. THE PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL The pre-primary school represents the first degree of the scholastic system and is to all the effects the first form of schooling. It has lasted triennial, it competes to the education and the affective, motor, linguistic and social development of children. To the pre-primary school they can enroll children that turn three years old within 30 April of the scholastic year of reference.

5. THE PRIMARY SCHOOL The primary school hard 5 years: there is a first year of base, two two years (1+2+2). The primary school is obligatory. To they can also enroll the children that don't have completed the 6 years yet but that they will perform them within 30 April of the scholastic year of reference. The frequency and the books of text are free.

7. The disciplines of teaching pointed out by the ministerial programs are: Italian language, English language, mathematics, sciences, history, geography, social studies, education to the image, education to the sound and the music, motor education and Catholic religion (optional). The elementary school constitutes one of the " fundamental social formations for the development of the personality of the little boy ."

THE SECOND CYCLE The second cycle is articulated in two runs: 1. the high school system 2. the crossed of professional education-formation These two runs to them it turns they are joined with the university, the high artistic formation, musical, the superior professional formation, the productive system and the world of the job. There is besides the possibility, beginning from the conclusion of the fifteenth year of age, to undertake the run: alternation school-job or the apprenticeship (third channel) with which and possible to respectively reach diplomas or qualification. In this band of age that has gone since 14 a 18 years it is easy to find the phenomenon of the scholastic dispersion.

THE 2° CIRCOLO DIDATTICO “GARIBALDI” The 2° Circolo Didattico “Garibaldi” is found to Altamura and it includes two centers primary’s school - Aldo Moro and Garibaldi - and three centers infant’s school - Aldo Moro, G. B. Castelli and Maria Montessori. The school Garibaldi is one of the oldest schools of our country and it has been built in 1957, while the school Aldo Moro has been built on 1975; the infant schools Aldo Moro and G. B. Castelli have been built in the years 80, while the school Maria Montessori has been built in this year.

19. The pre-primary school is formed from 20 sections and has had around 500 children since 3 a 6 years. It works for 8 hours a day and it has the canteen. The primary school has 42 classes and around 1200 children from the 6 to 11 years. The scholastic schedule primary’s school is structured in five days a week, from Monday to Friday. T he Monday the children reenter to school after lunch for three hours for the carrying out of optional activity. In our primary schools there are different laboratories: computer science, foreign language, sciences, ceramics, music and there are also the library and the room TV. They are altogether there 110 Teachers of Infant School and Primary School and 30 scholastic collaborators. The headmaster is Pasquale Castellano.

22. OUR TOWN: ALTAMURA

23. OUR TOWN:ALTAMURA Altamura is a big quite town in the south of Italy. It has a population of about sixty-four thousand and it lies in the hills, “Le Murge”, in the centre of Apulia. They call her the Lioness of Apulia: Altamura, fierce and rebellious, beautiful and noble city for her history and culture. It is to few more than 40 km from Bari and to 19 km from Matera, almost to the border of Puglia with the Basilicata. This is Altamura, city of history and from the illustrious past. The name remembers the mythical Queen Altea, and in the past takings also the name of Altilia, flourishing city of the ancient Peucetia. The remains of the Peucetian town, built the Megalithic Walls (V – VI century B.C.), who are somehow the base of the Medieval Walls. Five hundred years before Christ Altamura raze to the ground.

27. Altamura was rebuilt in 1232 by the Emperor Frederik II of Swabia on the traces of an old Peucetian town (Altilia or Petilia). Fred II declared Altamura and his territory, free city, dependent only from the king. Latins, Greeks and Jewish people arrived here because the Swabian Emperor garanted to every community free spaces and respect of their cultures.The old urban feature is a proof of that: narrow roads which lead to simple spaces, the so called “Claustri”, the several Latin and Greek Churches, the old Jewish ghetto called “La Giudecca”. After the Swabian domination, Anjou, Aragonese and Durazzo people ceded Altamura feud to numerous lord. Finally Altamura became property of Farnese’s family, Parma’s princes and of the Borboni. The rest of the history is as many glorious, from the Nine hundred up to our days.

The man's presence, to Altamura, it is ancient, as the rests of the man of Altamura, lived 400.000 years ago approximately in the cave of Lamalunga and the numerous finds recovered in the archaeological excavations of the territory. In 1999 hundreds of fossil prints belonging to different dinosaurs species were discovered in a quarry at 5 km far away from Altamura, along the road to Santeramo. These two discoveries have spread Altamura name all over the world.

33. THE CATHEDRAL The cathedral is the most important church in Altamura, it is the only church thatwas built by Frederick II of Swabia in 1232, independent o any Episcopal jurisdiction. Its architecture had been modified during centuries leading to the changing of its original features: the inverting of the orientation, the closing of the lateral arcades, the opening of the Angevin Door on the main square (XIII century); the extension of the plan and the building of the second bell tower (XVI century); the building of the domes and of the loggia on the facade (XVIII century), important indoor changes (XIX century). This church dedicated to Our lady of the Assumption isone of the four Palatine Basilicas of Apulia.

THE FOOD Altamura reveals its pastoral and agricultural origins in the traditional gastronomy that uses natural foods and genuine products both in its territory’s rich areas and in the arid Murgia countryside. The bread of Altamura is made with hard wheat and it is produced in big quantities; it is well-known and popular all over the world thanks to its D.O.P. mark (Denomination of Protected Origin). A great variety of tasty pasta is produced with the flours and it can be combined with any dishes of meat or vegetables or legumes. Murgiva herbs scents are also remarkable in cheeses like ricotta, scamorza, manteca or even in meat or vegetables dishes (u cutturidde).

38. The cardoon mushroom in the Murgia area and in our gastronomy. There are also a lot of cakes, many of them are made with almonds. The most typical are the cakes made during Christmas time, sch as “cartellate” and “ginocchietti” (with or without vincotto – cooked wine) or during Easter such as “scarcedde”, everything must be accompanied by the typical liqueur: a walnut digestive elixir “Padre Peppe”.
