2. OBJECTIVES
• At the end of class students will be able to:
• Define Breast feeding.
• Describe physiology of Lactation.
• Explain types of Breast milk.
• Explain technique of Breast feeding.
• Describe the advantages of Breast feeding.
• Define Artificial Feeding.
• Enumerate method of Artificial Feeding.
3. BREAST FEEDING
• Breast milk is
wholesome food for the
baby.
• Most effective way to
provide caring
environment &
complete nutrition.
INTRODUCTION
5. TYPES OF BREAST MILK
• Colostrum :
First 3 days after
delivery.
Thick , yellow.
Rich in Vitamin A,D,E,K.
• Transitional Milk:
Next 2 weeks.
Immuloglobins &
protein content
decreases.
Sugar Increases.
6. TYPES OF BREAST MILK
• Mature Milk:
It follows transitional
milk.
Thinner & watery.
But has all nutrient for
optimum growth of
baby.
• Fore Milk:
It is milk secreted at the
start of feed.
Rich in protein, sugar,
vitamin, & water.
7. TYPES OF BREAST MILK
• Hind Milk:
It come later, toward
the end of feed & is rich
in fat & energy &
satisfies the baby
hunger.
8. INITIATION OF BREAST FEEDING
• Initiation of breastfeeding within FIRST HALF
an hour of birth or as soon as possible after normal
delivery.
• In cesarean , within 4 hrs.
10. Positioning of mother & baby
• Explain mother to hold
baby , keeping in mind
the 4 key points.
– Head & body of baby
should be straight.
– Baby nose should be
opposite to nipple.
– Baby should be close to
her body.
– Whole body of the baby
must be supported.
11. Latching of baby to the breast
• After proper
positioning, baby cheek
is touched with the
nipple.
13. Latching of baby to the breast
• Sign of Poor latch
– Only nipple is in baby
mouth.
– Baby tongue is back
inside his mouth &
cannot reach the ducts
to press them.
– Sucking with poor
attachment may be
uncomfortable or
painful for the mother.
15. Advantages of Breast feeding to Baby
• Protects against allergies and eczema
• Causes less stomach upset, diarrhea, and
constipation than formula
• Could help prevent obesity.
• Make strong bond with mother.
16. • Breastmilk is constantly changing in its
composition to meet the changing needs of
the baby. It has the exact combination of
protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and
sugars needed for the human infant at various
stages of his growth.
Advantages of Breast feeding to Baby
17. • Nursing immediately following delivery causes the
uterus to contract lessening the risk of postpartum
hemorrhage.
• Women who nurse their babies for at least 6 months
lessen their chances of pre-menopausal breast cancer.
• Breastmilk is always available, clean, and the right
temperature.
Advantages of Breast feeding to
Mother
18. • A woman's ability to produce all of the nutrients that
her child needs can provide her with a sense of
confidence. Hormones released during breastfeeding
help to strengthen the maternal bond.
Advantages of Breast feeding to
Mother
22. ARTIFICIAL FEEDING
• Feeding child milk other than breast milk is
known as ARTIFICIAL FEEDING.
• It include cow’s milk, buffalo’s milk or
commercial milk.
23. Indication of Artificial feeding
• Death or absence of
mother.
• Prolonged maternal illness.
• Failure of breast milk
production.
• Mother who have TB & HIV
positive mother.
• Working mothers.
• Baby is adopted & mother
who has adopted baby is
not lactating.
24. Artificial formulas/ Feed
• Cow milk is cheap
alternative.
• Contain three time more
protein than breast milk.
• But protein in cow milk is
not fully digestible.
• First 6-8 weeks it is given
in 3 or 4:1. After 3-4
month undiluted given.
25. Artificial formulas/ Feed
• Buffalo’s milk
can also be used in
place of cow milk. It
should be skimmed &
then given in same
proportion as cow’s
milk for first 6-8 weeks.
26. Artificial formulas/ Feed
• Dried milk formulas
are available as either
cow’s milk based or
soya protein based.
27. METHOD OF ARTIFICIAL FEEDING
• Katori spoon feeding
when neonate cannot
suck on breast because
of prematurity or any
other congenital
malformation
28. METHOD OF ARTIFICIAL FEEDING
CUP FEEDING
• Another method of
feeding the baby.
• Give extra 5 ml.
29. METHOD OF ARTIFICIAL FEEDING
Gavage fedding
• 5fr. Feeding catheter is
required.
• Right lateral postion
after feeding.
• No need to give burp.
30. Summary
• Breast milk is nature's perfect baby food. It contains immunity-
boosting antibodies and healthy enzymes that scientists have yet to
replicate.
• Breastfeeding offers tremendous health benefits to both mother
and child. It is specially designed to cater for all child’s nutritional
needs in the first six months of life. For maximum benefits,
breastfeeding should be initiated soon after the birth of child and
should be maintained exclusively for six months, until weaning is
initiated.
