Verb patterns

1. EF intermediate + 7B

2. Infinitive with to:
- After an adjective
It’s very difficult to read his writing
- To say the purpose of something
I went to the cinema to see a film
- After certain verbs
I need to go to the supermarket

3. Infinitive without to (bare infinitive):
- After a modal verb
They can play the guitar really well
- After make/let (obligation and permission)
I went to the cinema to see a film

4. Gerund (-ing):
- When a verb is a subject
Watching TV series helps me to relax
- After a preposition
I’m very good at playing football
- After phrasal verbs
She’s given up working on Saturdays
- After certain verbs
They enjoy going to the cinema

5. Use NOT before the infinitive or the gerund
Be careful not to stay in the sun too long
Be careful to not stay ….
Be careful don’t stay ...
I hate not seeing the children at bedtime
I hate don’t seeing ….

6. They want that we go with them* (L1)
They want us to go with them
She asked me that I helped her* (L1)
She asked me to help her
