Obviously we are in an electronic age and technology is a part of our everyday lives. This is just a sampling of the social networks out there… Do you have profiles on these networks? How long has it been since you’ve used them? Do you know the information you have on these social networks? Do others have information about you on these networks? If you haven’t used or updated these recently than go in and update or delete your profile.
1 - Don’t put photos of yourself or others engaged in illegal or irresponsible activities 1/2 -Don’t drunk social media at all… can be seriously damaging with professional contacts 2 - Don’t post private messages on wall -- embarrassing, rude, and makes you look immature 5 - Don’t send apps your “trying” out to all your friends and don’t publish all your game activity -- would you hire someone who clearly spends all their time swapping cows and feeding goats? 6 - Always verify info -- it’s way too easy to “share” or retweet info and that makes it easy to get caught up in scams 7 - Grammar counts -- you will be judged by what you put out there and don’t want to come off like you’re in junior high 8 - Follow up once and don’t follow an employers or recruiters personal account -- you’ll look desperate, creepy, and considered spam
1 - Happygirl69 is not appropriate -- use your name 3 - Remove inappropriate pictures, videos, notes, comments, status, etc. 4 - Profile pictures should be of you in a friendly or professional setting -- no cartoons, drunk photo, no picnik photos, etc. – and photo albums should be cleaned up… would you want this picture to end up in newspaper or would you want recruiter, employer, or family to see 5 - Review comments and posts that you’ve made and ask yourself do I want my employer, a recruiter, or my mom/family to read this --- and be aware there is often no automatic spelling or grammar check on social networks 6 - Search yourself regularly and remove unwanted info -- google, yahoo, bing, pipl.com, 123people.com 7 - Careful of who or what you associate your profiles with -- check groups, fan pages, friends, etc -- again, would you want employer, recruiter, mom/family to see this and what they’ve posted (their settings might not be as private as yours) 8 - Lock all your profiles down -- friends only, different groups of friends, share only certain info with everyone 9 - Be short, clear, honest, and transparent -- if you’re not it can/will affect reputation and success
Social Networking can benefit your job search and career success -- here are some great examples of professional ways to use the most popular social networks
- Video LinkedIn you tube video - Walk through editing/creating my profile -- basic info, photo, summary, experience, education, additional info, personal info, contact settings - Personalize your URL
1 - alone, wearing appropriate clothing, simple background, and pleasant expression 2 - most important part of profile -- good example “recent cleveland state grad seeking online marketing position” “or seeking an internship in public relations” --- bad examples “student” “server at Starbucks” or leave it blank 3 - concise, specific, keyword-rich, typo-free 4 - ask professors, employers, internship supervisors, organization advisors, 5 - add linked in url to email signature, use linked in profile as website link on professional twitter or log accounts, feature on your resume, 6 – Ray?
- Use CC’s profile Nice thing is when you’re creating a profile LinkedIn does a great job of guiding you every step of the way - From connections -- First start by importing current email contacts - Colleagues, Classmates, People you may know - Search tool -- advanced - Personalize your invitations - Connect with those you actually know or have some sort of relation to -- if get an invitation and don’t know person just archive the message instead of “I don’t know button”
- Industry, Education, or Shared interest groups - Search groups -- CSU has an official group -- participate in discussions (share news, ask questions, share resources), answer/respond to posts - Learn more about groups -- you tube video
