RFID uses radio waves to identify objects like books and DVDs in a library. It can speed up check-out and check-in processes through self-check systems. While initial costs of tagging books and materials can be over $100,000, RFID provides benefits like faster inventory and sorting that increase efficiency. Some challenges include issues with tagging metal items and maintaining the distance needed for radio signals to work properly.
