HIS EXCELLENCY
DR KENNETH COMNINOS MICHAEL, AC
GOVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Dr Ken Michael AC is a distinguished engineer in his own right, but is better known for his tireless
and respected contribution to many aspects of government, business and community activity
within Western Australia spanning more than 40 years.
He was born in Perth in 1938 and is the son of migrants from the island of Castellorizo in Greece.
His father arrived in Australia in the 1890s as a young boy, was naturalised in 1905, soon after
Federation, and served with the 11th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces in the First World
War. His mother arrived in the mid 1930s and married his father soon after.
Dr Michael attended Highgate Primary School. He was eight years of age when his father
passed away, placing a major burden on his mother and family, a situation replicated in
many other cases.
He was fortunate to have support from his family, Perth Legacy and the then Department of Repatriation (now Veterans' Affairs), which
gave him the opportunity to pursue his education.
He studied at Perth Boys’’ High School and Perth Modern School before embarking on his educational pursuits at The University of Western
Australia. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering in 1961, and in doing so received the James
A Wood Memorial Prize.
BILL BOYD, SPECIAL GUEST TO CONFERENCE
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT’S REPRESENTATIVE
PAST ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT 2006-07
Bill Boyd joined the Rotary Club of Wellington South in 1971 and was club President in 1978/79. He
was District Governor of District 9940 in 1983/84 and he and Lorna moved to Auckland the
following year. He has been District 9920 Trainer, Rotary Foundation chair, Quiz chair and District
Archivist and Historian.
His first international appointment was in 1991 as Regional Rotary Foundation Co ordinator, and
he has been a member of or chaired a RI or Foundation committee every year since. He was a RI
Director from 1998 to 2000 and Treasurer in 1999/2000. In 2004 he was Moderator of the
International Assembly. Bill has conducted two Rotary Foundation project audits and was
Chairman of Rotary Down Under for several years. He is Chair elect of The Rotary Foundation.
Bill was President of Rotary International in 2006/2007, only the second New Zealander to hold that position. In that capacity Bill and Lorna
visited 40 countries, some several times.
Bill left school at 15 to work in his father’’s bookshop and retired in 1995 as General Manager of Gordon and Gotch Magazines. He still does
some consulting work in the industry. Bill and Lorna [and their families] have always been interested in sport. Lorna played tennis and
bowls and Bill was a rugby referee for 31 years. They have four children and twelve grandchildren.
Bill has been awarded the Rotary Foundation’’s Distinguished Service Award and Citation for Meritorious Service, a Distinguished Service
Award by Rotary Down Under and was named a member of the Queens Service Order for Community Service in the 2007 New Year’’s

GLENYS MCDONALD AM JP
Glenys McDonald has varied a career as a midwife, sports administrator, local government
executive, and carer, with that of researcher and author.
In 2001 she was acknowledged in the Queen’’s Birthday list with an AM for her contribution to
Masters swimming in Australia and community development.
It is her passion for HMAS SYDNEY II however, that led to her involvement with the
construction of the beautiful memorial in Geraldton; the location of the body of the unknown
sailor on Christmas Island, and ultimately to her becoming a Director of the Finding Sydney
Foundation.
She was on board the search vessel on that fateful day in March 2008 when HMAS SYDNEY
was found.
Glenys is President Elect of the Rotary Club of South Bunbury.
