2. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go
therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you.And behold, I am with you
always, to the end of the age.”
5. 1. JESUS SENT PETER
OUT (AS PART OF ATEAM)
TO DO WHAT HE HAD
SEEN JESUS DOING
6. As Jesus’ ministry spread...
✤ Peter and the other disciples saw him
performing many miracles.
7. ✤ They heard amazing words about the
kingdom of God being near (Matt. 4:17), at
hand (NASB).
8. ✤ They saw a new authority in teaching and
in casting out demons—no one else had this.
9. ✤ Jesus often took them aside to explain
more, to help them understand the hidden
meaning of powerful images.
10. Why do you think Jesus showed
them so much in a short period of
time?
11. They were being equipped to be his
ambassadors.
Now they need to step out without
Jesus being seen at the centre.
12. And he called the twelve together and gave them
power and authority over all demons and to cure
diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the
kingdom of God and to heal. 3 And he said to them,
“Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor
bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.
13. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and
from there depart. 5 And wherever they do not
receive you, when you leave that town shake off the
dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
6 And they departed and went through the villages,
preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
(Luke 9:1-6)
16. The human mind will retain:
10% of what is heard.
20% of what is seen.
50% of what is discussed.
17. The human mind will retain:
10% of what is heard.
20% of what is seen.
50% of what is discussed.
90% of what is participated in.
18. Jesus is developing Peter’s character and
his ministry.
- Peter gets the opportunity to do what he
has watched Jesus doing.
19. - He will take new steps of faith.
- He will work with another member of
the Twelve.
- Jesus’ approach to discipling them
showed his wisdom and care for each one, as
well as his strategy.
20. - He will take new steps of faith.
- He will work with another member of
the Twelve.
- Jesus’ approach to discipling them
showed his wisdom and care for each one, as
well as his strategy.
21. - He will take new steps of faith.

the Twelve.
- Jesus’ approach to discipling them
showed his wisdom and care for each one, as
well as his strategy.
23. Sending out of the Twelve here was an
extension [a part added to something to make
it bigger] of Jesus’ personal ministry.
We then see this comment about Herod
Antipas, who was in charge of Galilee,
24. “ Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that
was happening,” (Luke 9:7).
All over Galilee there was talk of miracles and of
a kingdom that wasn’t Caesar’s and wasn’t his!
25. There is a simple lesson:
The best way to develop in ministry is
first to walk alongside someone who is
farther along the road in the same area
of gifting.

27. There is a simple lesson:

28. Imagine someone has a burden for the lost
and an ability to get to know them and
understand them—we might call it an
evangelistic heart.
How would you help them to grow?
29. - Let them spend time with
someone who is seasoned in
winning others to Christ
- At first they can watch it being
done
30. - Then they can work with the
experienced person and learn
- Then they can move out on their
own
31. E.g.A young Christian has the seeds of a
prophetic calling; there is evidence of
meaningful words being given, with blessing
and fruit.
32. How can we help them to team up with
someone who is more experienced in hearing
God and prophesying, in a relationship of
fellowship and accountability?
How would you do the same for a person with a
teaching gift, healing gift etc.?
33. In summary:
- We might encourage people from the
platform, and in general conversation, about
the need to pray more (which is always
important) and,
34. - We might encourage them to ask
someone who is more mature in their gift,
“How would you like to meet and pray with
me each week?”
35. - We might also encourage ‘older’ believers
to make the first move to help new giftings
grow and develop
36. To develop gift, biblical teaching (in class,
sermons etc.) is needed, but personal
discipleship brings a extra growth and
development which teaching alone can
never achieve.
37.
38. Peter’s experience of being discipled shows
us that Jesus was willing to take risks.
39. Peter’s experience of being discipled shows
us that Jesus was willing to take risks.
- Peter was sent out in Jesus’ name.
40. Peter’s experience of being discipled shows
us that Jesus was willing to take risks.
- Peter was sent out in Jesus’ name.
- How would he represent the Master?
41. - Would the hasty (foolish) Peter get it
‘right’?
42. - Would the hasty (foolish) Peter get it
‘right’?
- Would he mess up?
43. - Would the hasty (foolish) Peter get it
‘right’?
- Would he mess up?
- Would he misrepresent the message of
Jesus, or the spirit of it?
44. JESUS SENT HIM OUT IN
HIS OWN NAME BECAUSE
HE WAS WILLING TO
STAND BY HIM IF HE
MADE MISTAKES.
45.
46.
47.
48.
49. In true discipleship there is room to develop and
grow, and someone to help deal with fears etc.
and safety as you do so.
50. There are opportunities to take bigger steps of
faith in a safe environment, knowing that we are
loved and cared for and that we will be supported
through all that might happen.
52. Going from village to village in pairs, the Twelve
proclaimed the good news of the kingdom and
called people to repentance.They demonstrated
the kingdom, (Mk 6:12,13)
53. 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people
should repent. 13 And they cast out many
demons and anointed with oil many who were
sick and healed them.
54. On their return they were to find Jesus and tell
him all about it.
When the apostles returned, they reported to
Jesus what they had done. Then he took them
with him and they withdrew by themselves to a
town called Bethsaida (Luke 9:10)
55. If you were Jesus what would you
want to talk with the returning
disciples about?
56. Jesus knew that it was important to talking about
their experiences:
- the highs and the lows
- the lessons learned,
- the questions they hadn’t been able to answer.
57. Jesus took time in a quiet place—he reviewed
things and gave support. There was accountability.
It was a joy and blessing for the disciples to tell
their stories, receiving approval and
encouragement
58. But Jesus could bring correction or further insight
into the situations they had come across.
It is a comprehensive example of what
discipleship is meant to be.
59. Leaders are always facing the dilemma of prioritising
the use of time.
Often we give our time to activities that are immediate.
60. Jesus knew that although the fields were ripe for
harvest, the key to the long-term growth of the
kingdom was for him to step back regularly and invest
time in his disciples.
61. Mark 9:30-31 in the NLT says, (the section
heading is Jesus Again Predicts His Death)
30 Leaving that region, they traveled through
Galilee.Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was
there,
62. 31 for he wanted to spend more time with his
disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of
Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his
enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will
rise from the dead.”
69. 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of
Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who
do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist,
others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of
the prophets.”
70. 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I
am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus
answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this
to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (Matt.
16:13-7)
71. 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I
am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus
answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this
to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (Matt.
16:13-7)
WHAT DO YOU SEE
HAPPENING HERE?
75. Two things happen:
- Peter produces an amazing confession,
declaring who Jesus of Nazareth really is,
- Peter receives revelation for himself.
76. At first Jesus was hearing God for Peter, but now Peter
is hearing God directly: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-
Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to
you, but my Father who is in heaven.”
- Peter is growing!
77. An important principle:
Discipleship does not aim to make or keep a
person dependent on another.
It aims to help them grow in their own
experience of God—to become more mature.
78. - able to live life out of their own relationship
with the Father;
- better able to recognise his voice,
- to understand his purposes,
- to become more fruitful.
79. Often discipleship is a short term process.
But the goal is always the same,
“Developing mature disciples, helping them to
work with greater confidence, growing in their
experience of the Spirit’s leading and enabling.”
81. After Peter’s confession,Jesus said more to him
about his future:
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in heaven. (Matt. 16:19)
82. After Peter’s confession,Jesus said more to him
about his future:
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in heaven. (Matt. 16:19)
WHAT DO YOU THINK PETER
THOUGHTTHATTHIS MEANT?
83. After Peter’s confession,Jesus said more to him
about his future:
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in heaven. (Matt. 16:19)
84. Peter has been seeking to learn and understand.
He’s been growing in faith and revelation.
Now he hears that he is to receive a very special
spiritual authority “the keys of the kingdom”.
85. ✤ He used it at Pentecost, proclaiming
the resurrection and Lordship of Jesus—he
held open the door of the kingdom to
the Jews in Jerusalem.
86. ✤ In Acts 10 he received a revelation that
would challenge the Early Jewish Church.
✤ The vision of the sheet let down from heaven,
containing all kinds of animals, clean and unclean
✤ The voice of God—a voice Peter had learned to
recognise.
87. ✤ Then he goes from Joppa to the
house of the centurion at Caesarea, and
preaches the Lordship of Jesus
✤ He witness the Spirit being poured
out upon a Roman centurion and his
relatives and friends.
88. ✤ As a result he would lead the
Jerusalem church into the era-changing
revelation that even to Gentiles God has
granted repentance that leads to life
(Acts 11:18).
He opened the door to the Kingdom to
the whole world!
89. Peter’s Path
✤ He heard“I will give you the keys” from
Jesus, but could not have imagined how much
it meant or what was to come.
90. ✤ Even after his confession there were still
painful lessons to come.
✤ But he asked questions and learned; he
had many difficult experiences but in the end
was the one who was entrusted with the keys.
92. Paul walked through the door that Peter
opened.
Paul…Met Jesus on the Damascus road
…Was a high-powered academic who had been
advancing in Judaism (Gal. 1:14)
93. …Sat at the feet of a relatively unknown disciple
called Ananias,
…Finds out from him what to do next
…Is prayed for
Like Peter, Paul also displayed the spirit of
a disciple.
