2. PLUG FOR NASIG
Because of time, I’ve limited my discussion to three new or significantly enhanced functions that I believe
could help catalogers/metadata wranglers. I’ll be exploring these, and other topics in more depth at the
NASIG preconference on MarcEdit 7 later this June. If you are in Atlanta, please feel free to drop in and
say hi.
Additionally – I’ll be posting these slides on slideshare, and with them, I’ve embedded shorter, targeted
demonstrations of each element/task covered.
4. USER DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT GOALS
MarcEdit 7 development focused on 3 main themes
Addressing Accessibility Issues and offer options specifically targeted as ease of use and complimenting
Accessibility options found in the Operating System [click]
Moving help closer to the User (though topical shortcuts, the help bar, Installation Agent, etc.)
Simplify Complex Processes. Specifically…
* Expanding linked data options, and smoothing the experience
* Making issues like working with XML/JSON data easier
Simplifying and Expanding Integrations (with ILS systems, Open Refine)
* Enabling light-weight clustering editing/selection
* Those covered today
5. TOPICS TO HIGHLIGHT (LINKED DATA PROCESSING)
Linked Data Reconciliation in MarcEdit
Using a rules file
(https://github.com/reeset/linked_data_rules),
MarcEdit supports reconciliation practices for both
bibliographic and authority data across nearly all
collections defined in the PCC’s Formulating URI
document:

7. TOPICS TO HIGHLIGHT (XML/JSON PROCESSING)
XML/JSON Processing Wizard
Wizard allows users to us a wizard to create translations from XML or
JSON to MARC without the need to write code or XSLT or XQuery
9. TOPICS TO HIGHLIGHT (CLUSTERING TOOLS)
MarcEdit Clustering Tools
This provide a light weight method for making
changes across clusters of data or extracting
recordsets based on the clustering of a specific set of
fields and subfields. Formats that are supported
include MARC (mrc), MarcEdit’s mnemonic format
(mrk), and tab delimited files. I’ll be expanding this
to Excel once I finish adding code to create Excel
documents after processing.
Throughout development, MarcEdit 7’s initial code name was Fluffy Muppet. It was partially because it was fun, and partially to remind me that one of the things I wanted to focus on this time around was making the experience working with the tool a delightful experience.
