With a view to help SMEs in emerging markets learn & implement sustainable business management practices The SME Toolkit is a project of the Small and Medium Enterprise Department of the World Bank Group and is available in multiple languages through local partners around the world. In South Africa, the local partner would be Business Partners. Business Partners long ago realised that many entrepreneurs have industry-specific skills, but may not have the training or experience to manage other aspects of the business, such as bookkeeping, administration or legal issues. They also do not have the budget to employ experts or trainers to provide the kind of expertise available on the Toolkit. This is also why the site is open to ALL entrepreneurs free of charge.
Revolving promotions highlighting categories and important articles; change monthly Interactive Tools, eg Sanlam Business Plan e-book – 1500 clicks per month. Sanlam Business Fitness Analysis – 500 clicks per month; mini-surveys (profile user and get feedback) How-to articles, printable spreadsheets, templates, useful links Keeps the site interactive, helps us profile the average Toolkit user. Also include SME competitions run by various institutions, regionally nationally and nationally Also invite to training – talk about later
Newsletter (to 2700 users) retains awareness and drives users to site Able to highlight special content and New Tools; BFA, Bus Plan e-book, survey (always a call to action) Articles: 50% of new articles per month will relate back to monthly themes, e.g. Insurance in the Tourism industry; Marketing your Bed and Breakfast; So all categories are constantly being updated. Visits to the site spike exponentially when the newsletter is sent out. (Google Analytics)
Ran an online survey on the website in October 2009 – got just over 100 responses Also sent out an e-mail shot with the same questions; got just over R140 responses Feedback mostly positive – gaps idenitified = info on exporting, accessing government funding
Latest = January Just over 18 000 hits Registered users – almost 3000 (registration only for statistical reasons); one third of whom are females More than half of our registered users are based in Gauteng, with the other provinces making up the rest. Most popular content – Starting a business, Sanlam’s Bus Plan –book, Bookkeeping, Cash Flow Management, Budgeting, Business Registration, then marketing and employee management
Goal from the beginning – any entrepreneur will find any answer to questions related to his business Be their first point of reference, front of mind, filling this gap that we have re: access to info No matter what his or her business; micro, small or otherwise
