Breaking the “laws”: 10 “commandments” & the “Torah”: The scribes were beholden to the law of Moses as recorded in the first five books of the Old Testament known as the Torah. v. 3, “. . . traditions of the elders” – humankind’s interpretations of the Old Testament. Discuss some historical interpretations of the bible noting the religion of the Slave Masters vs the slaves. The slavemasters use of the Pauline epistles regarding slavery and the slaves use of the OT deliverance narratives. The religious leaders sought to impose their version of piety upon Jesus and His disciples. People are prone to do that today especially with new believers. What are some traditions that we follow that aren’t mandated by the Bible? The black cloth over the seat of a deceased member’s pew; viewing the body of a deceased members at the close of the funeral; got to have your Sunday best to come to church; holding our hands up when we step out during worship; etc.
“miracles”, “trap”: Literally thousands of lives were changes through the healing that Jesus did. Last week we saw how Jesus fed 5,000 men with a small bag lunch. Yet rather than rejoicing, they were hung up on washed hands. Religious folks can never have any joy because they are more focused on the rules and regulations than the relationship. We need to remember that with our young people. As we get older, we lose our funness. “God”, “interpretation”: Since Jesus is God and God is only light (1 John 1), the holiness of Jesus qualifies Him above all others to interpret the original meaning of the law.
“hypocrites”: Original meaning of this word is to be a play-actor or to play out a role. These folks do one thing on the outside but behave totally different inside. “substituted”: see Romans 10:1–3, “1Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.”
“estate”: Corban is originally a good deed but used as an excuse for not taking care of one’s parents, you are breaking God’s original first priority which was to take care of father and mother. They were hypocritical because they would declare Corban but planned on keeping the estate to themselves. This is probably why the sin of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11 was so egregious. They were being hypocritical.
“outward”: when you find yourself following rules and regulations apart from a relationship, you have a Phariseeic kind of religion. Many cults operate this way. “inward” : the grace of God allows us to draw close to God. See Eph 2:8-9, 11-13 for God’s work of grace in our lives through Jesus Christ. See Eph 3:12 to see the freedom that we have to approach God.
“inside”:1 Samuel 16:7,7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” “transformed: Psalm 119:11,11I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” When we allow God’s word to marinate in our souls, the inward part of us is transformed. 2 Corinthians 5:17,17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! Romans 12:2,2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
