Introduction What does it mean to be gay and why does society discriminate against those who
are deemed to be gay? This paper establishes that being gay is primarily based on the supposition
that one is either homosexual, transgender, lesbian, or bisexual. It also establishes that one of the
primary reasons why gays are discriminated against within the society is religion; that some of the
views held by different religious conclaves substantiate gay rejection by the society. On a more
personal rather than institutional level, this paper also reveals that the culture of gay is also largely
rebuked based on individual philosophies and moral standings which is precisely the min reason as
to why hate crimes against gays have in the past found a substantive projection. In the American
socio–cultural fabric, the emergence of gays has generated a continuous debate about gay marriage;

As an enthusiastic member of the LGBT community, I believe that gay marriage should be
legalized in all states. Denmark was the first country to grant legal domestic partnership of gay
couples in the late 1980s. Shortly after this decision in Denmark, other European countries began to
do the same. When I was younger I lived in the Netherlands for about two years, and in 2001 it
became the first country to allow same–sex marriage. Currently, fifteen countries have legally
recognized same–sex marriage. In the United States, the fourteenth state has just legalized same sex

Gay marriage is one of the most debated and controversial issues in today's society. Everyone has
his or her opinions on gay marriage, whether it is acceptable or should not be allowed. According to
The Washington post, "59 percent say they support same–sex marriage while 34 percent are
opposed"(Craighil, P., & Clement). While 59% of the supporting gay is a high number, however
that number is skewed. There is a difference between tolerance and acceptance, but the 59% is the
total of the both. People have different perspectives on gay marriage. The ones that will be in this
essay are, social science against same–sex marriage, most religions against same–sex marriage, and
people for it.
People that approve same–sex marriage have been going up as time goes, and more people accept
same–sex marriage more than ever before. Thirty–one states have approved same sex marriage
(ProConorg Headlines). That many states would not have approved same–sex marriage if their
people didn't approve it. The states that have approved gay marriage are the most populous states,
such as California.
According to Gay marriage pro–con," Marriage is redefined as society 's attitudes evolve, and the
majority of Americans now support gay marriage"(ProConorg Headlines). In the 1900's interracial
marriage was forbidden and looked frowned upon, which is somewhat now happening with gay
marriage. Interracial marriage is now common, and most people supported.

A 2014 Gallup poll shows that support for same sex marriage in the U.S. has hit an all–time high of
55%. Whether or not Gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to marry has been a hot topic of
debate over the past few years. Although support for the right of same sex marriage has gained
massive amounts of attention from the media in resent months, not all are in favor of the almost
undeniable and unavoidable changes to the laws restricting these types of marriages. Every person
has the right to love whomever they wish, and every couple deserves the right to substantiate that
love through marriage, whether it be a heterosexual or homosexual relationship.
Let's take a look at some of the arguments opposing marriage equality. One of the leading forces
behind the opposition of gay marriage is the Christian community. This is because Christians are
taught through the bible that having a relationship with any member of the same sex is a sin. It is
stated specifically in Leviticus 18:22 that "you shall not lie with a male as with a woman, it is an
abomination". But what does Religion have to do with your rights as an American citizen. Sure
some religions may believe that same sex relationships are unacceptable in their community, but why
should they be able to determine how somebody outside that community lives their life?
