Father Damien was a Belgian priest who volunteered to serve a leper colony on the island of Molokai in Hawaii from 1873 until his death in 1889. He was the first volunteer to go to Molokai to help the lepers living there in isolation. During his time there, he built housing, a school, a church and a hospital to improve living conditions. In 1884, he was diagnosed with leprosy himself but refused to leave the colony. He is now recognized as a saint for his selfless dedication in caring for those suffering from leprosy.
