Speakers need information about their audience to aid them in developing their messages. Knowledge of the audience helps speakers relate to the audience. Audience analysis: collection and interpretation of data about characteristics, values, attitudes, beliefs of an audience.
These two distinctions are important. In most cases, people go to a yoga/exercise class voluntarily??? What kind do we have in this class room? When the students give speeches, what kind of audience do they have? What does this say about speech relevance? In a classroom experience, topic relevance is vital to having an attentive audience.
Demographic analysis: collection & interpretation of basic information such as age, gender, cultural or ethnic background, education, occupation, etc. The more info. the speaker possesses, the more able he/she is to adapt to a given audience, this being more effective in the presentation, particularly in terms of outcomes.
Draw out their comments on these audience analysis factors. . . --religion --geographic origins --group membership --other demographic factors
Stereotyping Over-generalizing Excluding minority groups
Psychological analysis: collection of data an audience members’ values, attitudes and beliefs. Seeks to determine how the audience will react to the speaker, the speaker’s topic, and surroundings in which the speech is presented.
What is the best information gathering technique from this list? Perhaps the easiest way to find out about an audience is by observation. The other approaches take more time but may prove worthwhile, particularly surveys with large audiences. The goal of these information gathering techniques is to help you relate and adapt your speech to your audience.
Select a handful of audience members prior to speech to ask them questions. Advantages – in-depth discussion, gives participant a chance to elaborate and explore. Disadvantage – too much time and small sample
Surveys – Hand out surveys Advantages – easy to administer, can get the entire audience. Disdvantages – paper costs, central tendency as opposed to consensus
Ethnography – Go and live with the audience (work at the office, tour the facilities) Advantages – incredibly in-depth, great connections and builds relationship with audience Disadvantages – time!!!
