1. Global warming and cooling essay
2011-1-28 Diane Guo
There are people around the world fighting for the truth: global warming or global cooling. For me, I believe in global warming. The ice at the North and South Poles is melting, which means the weather is getting hotter. Also, because of the melting of the ice, the sea level is rising. The burning of fossil fuels is causing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere to increase. On the other hand, people say that global cooling is caused by solar activities of the sun; it can’t be exactly accurate, because the satellite sensor might have some error when detecting the solar activities. Therefore there might be errors about that. So I think global warming makes more sense than global cooling.
Global warming, which most people believe in, is happening. The ice at North and South Poles is melting. The Wordie Ice Shelf near the Antarctic Peninsula, was discovered that it has completely disappeared at 2009 April. The Larsen Ice Shelf, (in the northwest part of the Weddell Sea, extending alone the east coast of Antarctic Peninsula) has shrunken 3 times the size of the Rhode Island!
Also in the U.S, roughly 100 million people live in coastal areas within 3 feet of mean sea level. Low laying cities such as Boston, Miami and New York are vulnerable to more storms, flood, and other natural disasters will hit the city.
The burning of fossil fuels and deforestation have caused greenhouse gases to warm up the earth. Too much CO2 surround the earth, block the way for energy to go out, trap the heat inside the earth. That caused our earth to warm up. Scientists have measured CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere going back more than 50 years, and have indirect measurements going back hundreds of thousands of years. These measurements confirm that concentrations are rising rapidly. Though the natural amount of CO2 have varied from 180 to 300 parts per million (ppm), today it is more than the highest natural levels over the past 800,000 years. During 1964 to 2008, these 44 years, the amount of CO2 has gone from 320 ppm to nearly 290 ppm! If we keep on driving cars and building more industrial factories, the world temperature will rise even more.
I disagree with the global cooling, because the world is really getting warmer and warmer, ice is melting, not freezing. Scientists are saying that global cooling is caused by solar activities, not caused by humans. Therefore, we as humans don’t have to do anything about it, because obviously we can’t do anything to stop the sun. If we don’t have to do anything about it, this means unlike global warming, those cars companies and industrial companies can still run their business as usual. If those owners of the companies want to keep their businesses well, they will try to tell everybody that global cooling is happening, not global warming. People don't have to do anything, just stay the same. We need to consider that that if they are telling the truth, or just making up for their business. German climatologist Jochem Marotzke predict at the end of this century, the world temperature will increase 1.5 to 4.5 degrees, maximum 6 degrees! Also the sea level will rise about 1 meter. The world population is increasing, more carbon dioxide have released to the atmosphere, cause the increase of green house gases, make green house effect more serious. There are so many facts and evidences that are saying global warming is true, there for global cooling do not exist.
There are more examples of global warming. It is happening. The ice at the North and South poles are getting less, polar bears are dying because there is no enough ice for them to live. In the movie “2012”, although it is just a movie, but we could imagine how bad it would be to be real. We can see what will happen if the sea level rises, if you don't want our earth to be destroyed, or live under the water, here are some things you can do to help. Use less heat energy, use a fan instead of air conditioner, or wear more clothes at home from turning on the heather. Don't waste time while taking shower, because getting hot water uses a lot of heat. Drive less and use more public transportation like bus and subway. These are only small things that you can do, but if everybody does them, it will be a huge effect to our earth.
Bibliography
Unknown.
