12. What is a goiter? What is a bosyo?
What is the thyroid gland?
A goiter is any abnormality or disorder of the
thyroid gland.
A “bosyo” is the common Filipino term for goiter.

The thyroid gland is
the small, butterfly-
shaped gland located
at the front of your
neck under your
skin.

13. What are the functions of the thyroid gland in
the body?
The thyroid gland is a vital hormone gland. It
produces hormones (thyroid hormones).
It plays a major role in the metabolism, growth
and development of the human body.
It controls the speed of metabolism (metabolic
rate), which is the process of how the body
transforms the food consumed into energy.

14. What are different kinds of goiter?
Kinds due to:
Abnormality in the AMOUNT of thyroid
hormones being secreted (FUNCTION) –
HYPERTHYROIDISM (excess)/ HYPOTHYROIDISM
(not enough)
Abnormality in the STRUCTURE of the gland –
ENLARGEMENT / MASSES (MALIGNANT / NON-
MALIGNANT)

19. How to recognize the different types of goiter so
that early consult and treatment will be
promoted?
First, DO THYROID self-exam or NECK self-exam
• Monthly frequency at least
• LOOK and FEEL (PALPATE) for anything
unusual on the central neck (enlargement or
mass).
• Swallow as you feel the central neck around
the windpipe.
• Anything unusual on the central neck
(enlargement or mass) that moves up and
down with swallowing is a GOITER.

If a goiter is suspected, determine whether
ENLARGEMENT / MASS or MASSES.
Then, consult a physician right away.

22. How to recognize the different types of goiter so
that early consult and treatment will be
promoted?
If you discover you have a goiter, chances are it is
NOT CANCER (BENIGN).
As 90% of all goiters are NOT CANCER (BENIGN).
Majority are COLLOID ADENOMATOUS GOITERS
(BENIGN).
But the goiter has to be further evaluated by a
physician for a definitive diagnosis.

• Ultrasound of the thyroid / neck
• Needle aspiration biopsy
• Thyroid function tests (FT4, FT3, TSH)
These should be done only as indicated (as
determined by a physician, particularly a thyroid
specialist).

modalities of goiters?
• Medications (thyroid hormones / antithyroid
drugs)
• Surgery
• Radioactive iodine therapy
• Watchful waiting for colloid adenomatous
goiters

specialist).

30. What are ROJoson’s health advice on how to manage goiters as a
layperson?
• Know what is a goiter or bosyo.
• Learn how to recognize a goiter on yourself or on your relatives
(particularly by palpating your neck).
• Once a goiter is determined or diagnosed by you to be present, try to
diagnose it further as to diffuse enlargement-goiter or nodular goiter.
Make a tentative diagnosis based on what you know on goiter.
• Try to look for signs of cancer of the thyroid. If present or suspected,
consult a physician (esp. a thyroid specialist) right away. Even without
signs of cancer, consult a physician as soon as possible for a definitive
diagnosis and management.
