The supplemental instructor provides peer assistance to students in traditionally difficult courses without focusing on individual deficits. They are paid, trained students who have mastered the course material and understand active learning pedagogy. Supplemental instructors hold voluntary study sessions, attend class to model good study techniques, and help students integrate and construct knowledge without overt teaching. Their role is between teaching assistants who can grade and view submissions, and regular students.
