NGRC Mission
The BIA‟s National Geospatial Resource Center was established in January
2007 to centralize and standardize geospatial-related data sources and business
processes. The NGRC is also intended to create a vital forum to share, engage
and collaborate on geospatial information, programs, processes, techniques and
available training programs throughout “Indian Country.”
The NGRC is also charged with providing geospatial support services in Geo-
system integration and establishing and maintaining the Enterprise Spatial Data
Clearinghouse for the BIA.

ESRI Enterprise Licensing
NGRC participates in the
DOI Enterprise License
Agreement (ELA) with
ESRI, providing the
industry-standard GIS
software to qualified
applicants at no-cost.
In 2009, the program
distributed approximately
$10.7M worth of software
to BIA and Tribal entities,

Two Types of GIS
“Standalone” Enterprise
• Stovepiped data • Integrated data
• Single discipline/business area • All business areas
• Not networked • Networked
• Easy to get started • Requires planning/coordination
• Oversight -- limited • Oversight -- critical
• Access Control – Easy • Access Control - complex
• Limited impact on operation – • Becomes a vital “utility” –
difficult to discern major impact on business
processes
