2. Why college? Why now?
• I always wanted to go to college, but couldn’t
afford it right after high school, so I went to
work
• I have finally saved up enough money to pay
for my classes
3. How do you plan on using your college
education?
• I really want to be a nurse and help people
• I also know I can make more money as a nurse
than I do now as a waitress, so I can afford to do
more for my kids.
4. What are you curious about in life?
• I’ve always wanted to know more about how
the human body works.
• I’d like to know more about science.
• I wish I had more time to read more. I feel like
there’s so much I don’t know.
5. What are some of your strengths or
areas in which you excel?
6. What have been some challenges you have
faced in school and do you foresee these
being challenges in college?
• When I was young I couldn’t read very well, and
it made me frustrated and mad.
• School was always really hard for me, and after a
while I just kind of stopped trying.
• I dropped out after 10th
grade.
• Eventually I went back and got my GED so I could
go to college.
7. What are some of your additional
concerns about starting college?
• I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep up with the reading.
I’m taking an extra reading class, and I hope that will
help me.
• I hope I can learn to take notes better, and do better
on tests. Taking tests really scares me and I get upset
and can’t focus, so I don’t do very well.
• I’m afraid that after work and dealing with the kids, I
won’t have enough time to study.
• It’s been a long time since I’ve been in school, so I’m
worried about being the oldest one in the classroom,
and that I won’t fit in and have someone to talk to.
8. My best environment for studying
• I like to study and read where it’s quiet, and
there’s plenty of light. I know some people
(like my kids) like to study with their music
really loud, but I need quiet to read. I’m
hoping I can study in the library or even
Starbucks when it gets too loud at home, or at
least study after the kids go to bed and it’s
quiet in the house.
9. Helpful Resources
• I’d really like to talk to an academic advisor. I
talked to one a little before I registered for
classes, but I think I need more help figuring
out which classes to take next.
• I also want to know more about financial aid
and how I can get more money to help me
take classes without having too many student
loans.
10. Reflection
I shared my answers with my husband. He’s always been really helpful
to me and he knows me really well. He knows I’ve always dreamed of
being a nurse and he thinks I can do it. He always has my back and he
believes in me. He says he’ll try harder to help with the kids and the
housework so I have more time (and quiet) to study. I’ll just need to
keep reminding him, I think.
Talking to him made me feel better about coming back to class. I know
it’s not going to be easy, but he thinks I can do this, and I know I can
do this, so I’m going to work my hardest to make it happen. I can’t
wait to graduate and fulfill my dreams to be a nurse and be able to
help people!
