The Jerwood Dance house, Ipswich for Dance East, by John Lyall Architects
1. Jerwood Dance House, Dance East, Ipswich.
A new purpose-built dance house is located within the larger mixed-used Cranfields Mill project.
The Jerwood Dance House - to use its formal name - consists of four double height dance studios.
The largest has seating for 200 people to be used as a flexible public performance space. There are
also supporting scenery spaces, a green room, extensive washing and changing facilities and
administration offices. The project extends onto the waterside, where a small shop and cafe
is located. Community involvement is key for the dance company, and the design reflects this.
The scheme consists of 2400 sq metres and the budget is just under £10 million.
It will accomodate a wide range of user groups, from professional dance companies to pre-school
tots groups. The dance house is due to open in October 2009.
See www.danceeast.co.uk for more information on the dance company.
