3. Males:
In our film opening,
the two protagonists
are male. In most
post-apocalyptic
films such as: I Am
Legend, The Book of
Eli etc.
the protagonists are male. This is often because
male characters are usually displayed as strong,
brave and determined.
4. Ethnicity:
However, as shown in the previous
slide, the protagonists in those
two films are black and our main
two characters are white. However
this is not a strict convention of
post apocalyptic films (Black
American males) as can be seen in
diverse films such as The Road and
Mad Max.
Due to limitations of obtaining
actors who were not white British,
we were left with little option to
have our protagonist belong to
this social group.
5. Our protagonist (Jake) is
shown as a willing and
stoic character through
his costume, makeup and
props:
The rucksack and stick
portray that Jake is a
survivor and he looks
equipped and organised. It
also shows that he is used to
travelling around.
The make up (dirt) makes him
look like he’s been through
a lot, but is still coping
despite the natural
disasters.
6. With our two
characters there
are stereotypes:
Jake is a
stereotypical
protagonist in
terms of
the
narrative,
he is a
venerable
survivor.
8. Overall, male protagonists
are common in this genre
which shows that they are
dominant characters and
that male characters
represent tough, heroic
and eager personalities.
9. Jake is represented as a serious character who knows his
knowledge about how to survive the apocalypse. This in fact
contrasts the stereotypical representation of teenagers, as
most people associate them as fun, mischievous and up to no
good. Our character is opposite – he is a mature 18 year
old who is taking everything seriously. The audience can
see this through the way he acts in our opening and can
relate to his expression and reaction to finding himself in
a random room.
10. British:
Most post-apocalyptic films are American.
Some America films include British actors
such as: Star Trek and Star Wars. Many
‘bad guys’ are played by British
actors/actresses. In ‘Revelation’, all
our characters are British and the
distribution company is British and
independent.
11. The location – countryside/woods is
iconic as British scenery. An example of
this representation would be shown
through TV Crime Drama, Midsomer Murders.
12. To conclude, the main social
groups that would be
interested in ‘Revelation’
would be determined by age
(mature audience), gender
(stereotypically mostly
males) and nationality
(patriotic British).
