1. Media Conversation Video Evaluation
What went well?
Overall, I am quite pleased with the general outcome of the filmconsidering we filmed it in
about 2 hours, so I think what we managed to make was good within the time constraints. I
also really loved the music I found as I often find music the hardest part of editing because
I’m rather picky and the music I do find is never quite right, but the piece I found for the
conversation was just dramatic enough that it created the feeling a feeling of tension in the
lead up to the conversation but when the characters where talking it could easily fit as
background music and added to the comedic theme of the piece. I also liked the fact that for
the match on action part of the piece, Josie and I managed to come up with an idea that
wasn’t just a door (sort of, it was a lift door but still).
What didn’t go well?
The main thing that I don’t like about the video is the voiceover for the bear. I had to do
them myself as we put off doing them then realised about an hour before the video had to
be fully edited and handed in, that we hadn’t done them. I am in no way a voice actor and
my voice kept breaking trying to do such a low voice so they really didn’t come out well at
all. As I said we were quite rushed towards the deadline so I think our time management
probably could have been better, but we did get it in on time so it isn’t all bad. There was a
shot in the lift where I wanted the camera to zoom in on Tom’s face whilst physically moving
out so it looks like the background is moving but the face stays in the same position in the
frame. We weren’t able to do this shot as it was impossible to zoom out and pull the focus
so Tom’s face didn’t go blurry, and keep the shot steady so I would have liked that shot as it
would have added to the comedic element of the video but overall it wasn’t crucial.
Would you change anything if you could go back and startover?
In general, I am happy with the filmand how we delivered its concept, so there isn’t
anything major I would change apart from a few shots that would be on my snagging list of
we were still filming, like the shot of Tom washing his face was a bit shaky so we could have
used a steady cam or tripod instead to solve that. The other main issue as I said was the
voiceover and the fact that I sound awful, but also the fact that the audio clarity between
the two speakers is very different as the voiceover was done with me speaking very close to
the camera with little background noise, whereas when Tom talks to the bear he is further
away from the mic, but also in a room with lots of server boxes on the walls so they were
creating sound pollution that can be heard in the final edit. Another thing I think I would
change is the location for some of the shots due to bad lighting or like in the bathroom
scene the sink is rather low and small as we had to use a disabled toilet and I just think it
would look a bit better with better lighting (natural) or better locations.
What have you learnt for next time?
I’ve learnt a few things to do with being organised with the equipment for example, make
sure the cable from the mic is actually plugged into the camera, make sure you have an SD
2. card in the camera, don’t put the lens cap down in random places and forget where you put
it. These are all just small things but they really do slow you down in the long run if you’re
that unorganised like me. I also had to trust Josie to do some of the shots without me there
as we couldn’t filmat a time when our actor and I were both free, so some of the shots
were totally up to her and as I have worked by myself for all the other projects we’ve done I
wasn’t used to not having an input, but everything turned out okay so it just shows I don’t
need to be so pedantic about everything.
