Roderick Garcia, DMD, is a dentist practicing out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. An avid fan of New England sports, Roderick Garcia, DMD, is especially fond of the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox launched in 1901 as the Boston Americans. They became the Red Sox in 1907 and by 1918 had won five World Series titles, the most of any team in baseball at the time. In fact, the team’s first five postseason trips resulted in World Series victories. The Red Sox launched in 1901 as the Boston Americans. They became the Red Sox in 1907 and by 1918 had won five World Series titles, the most of any team in baseball at the time. In fact, the team’s first five postseason trips resulted in World Series victories. The team’s fortunes changed drastically in 1920, however, when Red Sox management traded young pitching phenom George Herman Ruth Jr., known as the Babe or the Bambino, to the New York Yankees. The Yankees, who had yet to win a World Series, have since won a Major League record 26 titles. The Red Sox, meanwhile, began to suffer from the so-called Curse of the Bambino at once.
  3. 3.  The team failed to qualify for the playoffs for nearly three decades. Their return to the postseason saw a sixth World Series run, but this time Boston fell in seven games to St. Louis. Boston again made the World Series the following season, and this time they lost to St. Louis in seven games. The Red Sox continued to make the playoffs sporadically, including several tough losses to the rival Yankees, and reached the World Series in 1975 and 1986, losing in seven games on both occasions. After a seven-game loss to New York following the 2003 American League Championship Series (ALCS), the 83-year Curse of the Bambino was seemingly inescapable. In less than a year, however, the losing streak would finally end.
  4. 4.  During the 2004 ALCS, Boston found themselves trailing the Yankees 3-0. No team in a major North American sports league, including the NHL, NFL, and NBA, had ever recovered from a 3-0 hole in a best-of-seven series. The Red Sox became the first team to achieve the feat and went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series win in 86 years. They went on to win additional championships in 2007 and 2013.
