  2. 2. It is also known as medial calcific sclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is thickening and loss of elasticity of arterial walls. In it Calcific deposits which is a type of dystrophic calcification in the tunica media of medium sized arteries seen.
  3. 3. It is a physiological phenomenon usually seen in persons over 50 years of age.it has little or no clinical significance. Mostly affected vessels are muscular arteries of extremities and arteries supplying femal genital tract.
  4. 4. Medial calcification is often an incidental finding in x ray of affected sites. Grossly the involved blood vessels undergoes calcification and thickening which can be palpated for peripheral vessels. It produces pipestem like rigid tube without causing narrowing of lumen.
  5. 5. Microscopically Monckeberg’s arteriosclerosis is characterized by deposits of calcium salts in the media in the form of concentric blue rings or basophilic coarse granules without associated inflammatory reaction. Intima and adventitia remain intact.
