  1. Introduction to the Library Hello! I would like to share with you a quick overview of the library and the many resources available to you. As you progress through your program of study here at TC, there will be occasions when your instructor will assign a research project or ask you to locate specific information. You may also be interested in finding books, media or information of personal interest.
  2. What is a library anyway? A quiet place to study away from the distractions of family, friends, job & the many other things that are part of everyday life. Located in the McSwain building on the Tri-County campus, the library is a welcoming area to read, study and find information. Study rooms are available for group projects or individual work. The library is also a place to find print books & media which you can borrow for both school projects and leisure time.
  3. Your student ID card is used to check out materials and to access Library databases. Just bring your student ID to the front desk to activate your account. Your Library Card # is your password to many of the online resources
  4. To find out what the library owns, check the online catalog, a listing of ALL items owned by the Library. Links to the catalog are found on the library webpage. A useful feature is the ability to search and ‘Place a Hold’ on an item online. If an item is not available at TC it can be borrowed from other libraries. For more detailed information on how to do this, contact the library staff or use the My Library Account handout in your packet.
  5. The Library of Congress classification system is used in college and academic libraries to make it easier to group specific information.
  6. You are welcome to visit the library! Our hours are Mon-Thurs 8am-9pm and Friday - 8am-Noon. The Library is closed on weekends and holidays.
  7. What is a library anyway? The TC library is also a Virtual online library developed to bring electronic and Internet resources to your fingertips. – the focus of today’s session A library is also a Virtual online library – the focus of today’s session
  8. Most of the library databases consist of electronic resources known as Electronic Periodicals, Electronic Magazines , Electronic Books or E-books which are digital versions of print publications. As an example, the library has a large volume set of the print Encyclopedia Britannica as well as a subscription to the electronic or digital version which you can access on the computer. Over 25,000 electronic books and 10,000 electronic magazines are available to you via the Library web site. ALL of this information can be retrieved and read on YOUR computer 24/7. Remember, the information contained in the electronic format is the same as the print publication. While you may not want to read an entire book on your computer, electronic books are very useful for research because it is so easy to search with keywords to find specific information.
  9. What are electonic databases? By definition a database is an organized collection on information stored in a digital format. As you know, ANYONE can post information to the Internet but that person is not necessarily an expert in the topic he is posting. When you are resarching an assignment, it is important to make sure that the information you are retrieving and citing is factual and reliable. That is where the library databases come in to help you. The information in databases, which can be magazine and book text or material specifically developed for the database, is credible, reliable information which has been reviewed by editors and experts. The beauty of using electronic databases to locate information is that it is keyword searchable which allows you to quicly locate exactly the info you need using powerful search engines. Much like you locate information on the Internet using Google, Yahoo or your favorite search engine. While electronic databases are mined in the same way as the Internet AND you use an Internet browser to access them, they are different from Internet sources again. If your instructor has stated that you need a book or magazine source as well as an internet source, electronic books or information retrieved from the library web page will satisfy your instructors criteria. It does not have to be an actual print copy. You may have a newspaper or magazine delivered to your house by the US Mail and the library receives information this way too. Our electronic books and magazines are the same except that they are delivered via the Internet. If you aren’t sure whether information you have retrieved will satisfy your instructor, just ask him or check with the library staff. The library pays subscription fees to make electronic databases available to you and for that reason a password required for off-campus access. Be sure to contact the library by phone or e-mail for your password. Be ready to supply your student ID#
  10. It can sometimes be difficult to find the electronic information you’re interested in within databases, because databases can’t think, they just process the information that you feed them.  Don’t forget that you are dealing with a computer, not a human being! When searching digital information, the computer does not know exactly what you want to know about the words you type in.
  11. Many of you will want to use the resources of the library at times when it is closed or maybe you are an online students who needs research materials while you are at home. Or maybe, you have a project which is due soon and you do not have time to visit the library. For you, in addition to the physical hours the library is open, the Library website or Virtual Library is your 24/7 access to library resources. You will find electronic magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, electronic books, audio books, videos and more to supplement your information needs, ALL organized to provide YOU with a simple & efficient way to login to ALL of the resources available to you.
