What is Team ?
 A Team comprises a group of people linked in a common purpose.
 Teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are

high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.
 Teams normally have members with complementary skills and

generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each
member to maximize his/her strengths and minimize his/her
weaknesses.
What is Teamwork ?
Teamwork
 Team members need to learn how to help one another, help other

team members realize their true potential, and create an environment
that allows everyone to go beyond their limitations.

 A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong

sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating
performance greater than the sum of the performance of its
individual members.
How does a Team Work Best?
 A commitment to common objectives
 Defined roles and responsibilities
 Effective decision systems, communication and work procedures

 Good personal relationships

Tuckman’s model
Stage 1: FORMING
 High dependence on leader for guidance and

direction . Little agreement on team aims other than
received from leader.

 Leader must be prepared to answer lots of questions

about the team's purpose, objectives and external
relationships.

 Encouragement and maintains open communication.
Stage 2: STORMING
 The storming stage is necessary to the growth of the team.
 The maturity of some team members usually determines whether the team

will ever move out of this stage
 In this process , the team members can resolve their differences and

members will be able to participate with one another more comfortably.
Stage 3: NORMING
 Roles and responsibilities are clear and accepted.
 Big decisions are made by team agreement. Smaller decisions may be

delegated to team.
 There is general respect for the leader and some of leadership is more

shared by the team.
 All team members take the responsibility and have the ambition to

work for the success of the team's goals.
Stage 4: PERFORMING
 The team is more strategically aware , the team knows clearly why it is

doing what it is doing.

 The team has a high degree of autonomy.
 Disagreements occur but now they are resolved within the team

positively, and necessary changes to processes and structure are made
by the team.
 Team members might ask for assistance from the leader with personal

and interpersonal development.
Stage-5 : Adjourning
 Tuckman's fifth stage, Adjourning, is the break-up of the team,

hopefully when the task is completed successfully, its purpose fulfilled.
 From an organizational perspective, recognition of and sensitivity to

people's vulnerabilities in Tuckman's fifth stage is helpful particularly
if members of the group have been closely bonded and feel a sense of
insecurity or threat from this change.
Recipe for Successful Team
 Commitment to shared goals and objectives
 Clearly define roles and responsibilities
 Use best skills of each member of team
 Allows each to develop in all area

 Effective systems and processes
 Clear communication
 Beneficial team behaviors; well-defined decision procedures and

ground rules
 Balanced participation
 Awareness of the group process
 Good personal relationships

What is Team ?  A Team comprises a group of people linked in a common purpose.  Teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.  Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize his/her strengths and minimize his/her weaknesses.
  • 3. What is Teamwork ? Teamwork  Team members need to learn how to help one another, help other team members realize their true potential, and create an environment that allows everyone to go beyond their limitations.  A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members.

  • 6. Stages of Team Development Forming Storming Norming Performing Adjourning Tuckman’s model
  • 7. Stage 1: FORMING  High dependence on leader for guidance and direction . Little agreement on team aims other than received from leader.  Leader must be prepared to answer lots of questions about the team's purpose, objectives and external relationships.  Encouragement and maintains open communication.
  • 8. Stage 2: STORMING  The storming stage is necessary to the growth of the team.  The maturity of some team members usually determines whether the team will ever move out of this stage  In this process , the team members can resolve their differences and members will be able to participate with one another more comfortably.
  • 9. Stage 3: NORMING  Roles and responsibilities are clear and accepted.  Big decisions are made by team agreement. Smaller decisions may be delegated to team.  There is general respect for the leader and some of leadership is more shared by the team.  All team members take the responsibility and have the ambition to work for the success of the team's goals.
  • 10. Stage 4: PERFORMING  The team is more strategically aware , the team knows clearly why it is doing what it is doing.  The team has a high degree of autonomy.  Disagreements occur but now they are resolved within the team positively, and necessary changes to processes and structure are made by the team.  Team members might ask for assistance from the leader with personal and interpersonal development.

Stage-5 : Adjourning  Tuckman's fifth stage, Adjourning, is the break-up of the team, hopefully when the task is completed successfully, its purpose fulfilled.  From an organizational perspective, recognition of and sensitivity to people's vulnerabilities in Tuckman's fifth stage is helpful particularly if members of the group have been closely bonded and feel a sense of insecurity or threat from this change.

Recipe for Successful Team  Commitment to shared goals and objectives  Clearly define roles and responsibilities  Use best skills of each member of team  Allows each to develop in all area  Effective systems and processes  Clear communication  Beneficial team behaviors; well-defined decision procedures and ground rules  Balanced participation  Awareness of the group process  Good personal relationships
