Giving and receiving feedback are tough for everyone. Who wants to criticize others or be criticized? Although managers have a duty to give honest feedback to staff and peers, many people resist change or differ on how to change—leading to interpersonal conflicts and impacting deliverables.

Do you think you get enough feedback about how you can be more effective from your boss?.... Your team probably thinks the same about you. Receiving good feedback gives you powerful information that can dramatically decreases the time required to master a skill or help you blow down the barriers that prevent you from getting to the next level. If only you knew.

In healthcare organizations, it is mission critical that leaders and managers possess the skills to deliver direct, honest feedback to supervisees and peers. Currently, many managers receive minimal training on how to provide concrete feedback plus coaching that can help team members improve their performance. As a result, many supervisees receive feedback that is conflicting, confusing, or no feedback at all. In this workshop, Grace Ng will discuss the current challenges in giving and receiving feedback, provide frameworks and tools that can be applied in feedback conversations, and share her vision for moving towards a culture of feedback and learning.

0. When people negotiate in bad faith 0. Demand avoidance: people engage in negotiation because they’re forced to, not because they want to. 0. Ex: posting a job ad even though there’s an internal candidate the organization wants. 0. Opportunistic avoidance: they want to get something from you outside the negotiation 1. Ex: wanting to get on someone’s attention 0. False negotiations: people try to delay the process to get an advantage down the line 0. Cues during negotiation of bad faith. 0. Not responding to messages or offers, 0. Avoiding making a concrete offer, 0. Avoiding talking about any substantive issues, 0. Talking about external constraints (“my hands are tied”), 0. Distracting you with issues they don’t care about (“beating around the bush”) 0. Talking about how interested they are in reaching an agreement (stringing you along) McGuire’s innocution theory 1. People are not well practiced at defending attitudes that they take as truisms. 0. We avoid self-reflection 0. We tend to assume that everyone agrees with us 0. We rarely come into contact with people who disagree. 0. People who disagree, won’t confront us. 1. As a result, people are not able to resist some persuasive attacks. They don’t know how to defend their beliefs. 1. Hence, when finally ecnounterign different views, they are easily persuaded. 1. To help people resist, individuals must be inoculated from future attacks. 3. Passive inoculation (provide them with supportive arguments that can be used to defend themselves in the future). This does work but most effective when people are given arguments that refute the ones they hear in the future. 3. Active inoculation (give them samples of attacks and ask them to develop their own counterarguments). Works better than passive since they gain practice defending themselves. Works even if the arguments they practice with are not the same ones they encounter in the future. 3. Informational approach (give them examples of future arguments but do not tell them how to respond/refute). Does not work. 3. Refutational approach (give them examples of future arguments and either tell them how to refute them or have them practice refuting them). This works. 1. People who are inoculated are more resistant to change attempts than are those who are not. Why? 4. They better at counterarguing. 4. Resisting a persuasive argument instills self-efficacy and attitude strength. 4. Makes the countarguments more accessible. They don’t have to think of a refutation; it quickly comes to mind. I. Functional approach. A. People deve ange their behaviors, you must understand their reasons B. Once you understand their reasons, you must develop a strategy that attacks the specific reason that form the basis of their justifications. II. Katz’s functional approach A. Instrumental function: I do it because I am rewarded for it. 1. Arises from need deprivation and maintained through reinforcement. Extrinsic rather than intrinsi.

BOOK 1984 MiniProject: What makes a human being? One of the themes of 1984 is human dignity. In Part Two, Winston’s dreams and memories of his mother lead him to an appreciation of the proles and to the realization that “the proles had stayed human” (165). In Part Three, O’Brien refers to Winston as “the last man...the guardian of the human spirit” (270). Step 1: Write to analyze and explain your perspective on what it means to be human. Your writing should be 1-2 pages typed and printed. Think about all of the qualities that make a person “human” according to Winston—qualities that Winston says the Party has taken away and that Winston has had to “relearn by conscious effort” (165). Consider those qualities in your analysis and emphasize and/or add the qualities that you feel are most important to being human. Be sure to reflect the importance of each of the qualities both within the novel as well as importance to the human experience. Step 2: Choose from the options below or create your own (must be approved) to present/ illustrate your analysis: 2. Create a “recipe” that contains all of the essential “ingredients” that make up a human being. 3. Write your own lyrics to a song that explains what it means to be human. 4. Reflect key events from Winston or Julia’s point of view (ex. diary, social media account, video). 5. Make a written, audio, video, visual recording of Winston’s diary throughout the novel. 6. Create an interview with one of the characters (ex. News broadcast, talk show). 10. Create your own original ending for the novel. This was a fun presentation to give to an audience of tech writers, back in 2003. As a Philosopher and Psychologist, I was able to give people some real insights in their usual personalities and communication styles - and show them some non-aggressive methods to cope with more extravert, more aggressive bosses and co-workers.

Introduction to the Study of Conflict Communication DEFINING INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT Interpersonal conflict is a problematic situation with four unique characteristics: The conflicting parties are interdependent. They have the perception that they seek incompatible goals or outcomes or they favor incompatible means to the same ends. The perceived incompatibility has the potential to adversely affect the relationship if not addressed. There is a sense of urgency about the need to resolve the difference. Interpersonal conflicts occur with people who are important to us and who we expect to continue seeing or working with in the future. INEVITABILITY OF CONFLICT As relationships become closer, personal and more interdependent, conflict is more likely, hence inevitable. (inevitability of conflict principle) Conflict is inevitable whether it’s overt or hidden. Overt: E.g. Yelling, screaming, swearing etc. Hidden: E.g. Giving each other the silent treatment, purposely avoiding eye contact, sending mixed messages to each others etc. CAUSES Incompatible goals: We seek different outcomes. Incompatible means: We have different opinions on how to achieve the same goal. Cultural divides Ethnic Racial Religious groups Political and values barriers Conservatives vs. liberals Gender gaps between the sexes Economic and power divides between upper and lower classes Age barriers between younger and older citizens EFFECTS Mismanaged conflicts could adversely affect relationships: People feel uncomfortable when together (may want to exit etc.) People feel dissatisfied with partners (refuse to forgive, seek revenge etc.) People have desire to change (Apathetic/disinterested) Sense of Urgency Effective conflict management is needed before someone reaches their breaking point. SOLUTION Build bridges through communication Take time out of your busy schedules. Pay attention to matters you may consider unimportant. Spend money and allocate often-limited resources. Listen to people you would like to ignore. SOLUTION Produce satisfaction in long-term relationships: Love- Nonverbal expressions of positive regard, warmth, or comfort Status- Verbal expressions of high or low prestige or esteem Service- Labor or one for another Information- Advice, opinions, instructions or enlightenment Goods- Material items Money- Financial contributions Shared time- Time spent together In the best kind of long term relationship, partners believe they get what they deserve. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT VS CONFLICT RESOLUTION Conflict Management: Communication behavior a person employs based on his/her analysis of a conflict situation. Involves alternative ways of dealing with conflict (including resolution or avoidance). Conflict Resolution: One alternative in which parties solve a problem or issue and expect it not to arise again. CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AS A SKILL You have a choice when faced with conflict. You need to have a meta-conflict perspective to manage conflict eff ...
