semântica no estilo “significado-como-uso”.

4. Gödel’s Dialectica
Interpretation
“In proof theory, the Dialectica
interpretation is a proof interpretation of
intuitionistic arithmetic (Heyting arithmetic)
into a finite type extension of primitive
recursive arithmetic, the so-called System T.
It was developed by Kurt Gödel to provide a
consistency proof of arithmetic. The name of
the interpretation comes from the journal
Dialectica where Gödel’s paper was published
in a special issue dedicated to Paul Bernays
on his 70th birthday.”

6. Ponto de Partida
Ponto de partida desde 1985 (2o ano do
Doutorado):
Para formular os fundamentos da teoria da
computação, seria preciso tomar por base
os fundamentos da matemática construtiva
Matemática intuitionística (Brouwer, 1906):
objetos matemáticos são construções
mentais. Prova de existência: algoritmo.

7. Intuicionismo de
L.E.J. Brouwer (1907)
Primeiro Ato do Intuicionismo:
“Completely separating
mathematics from mathematical
language”
Segundo Ato do Intuicionismo:
“Admitting two ways of creating
new mathematical entities”

9. Michael Dummett e o
Anti-Realismo
“In analytic philosophy, the term anti-realism
describes any position involving either the denial
of an objective reality or the denial that
verification-transcendent statements are either true
or false.”
“The term was coined by Michael Dummett, who
introduced it in his paper Realism (1982) to re-
examine a number of classical philosophical
disputes involving such doctrines as nominalism,
conceptual realism, idealism and phenomenalism.”

10. Michael Dummett:
crítica a Brouwer
“As pointed out by Dummett, this whole way
of arguing with its stress on communication
and the role of the language of mathematics is
inspired by ideas of Wittgenstein and is very
different from Brouwer’s rather solipsistic
view of mathematics as a languageless
activity. Nevertheless, as it seems, it
constitutes the best possible argument for
some of Brouwer’s conclusions.” (Prawitz
1978)

11. Dummett-Prawitz e o
Verificacionismo
“I have furthermore argued that the rejection
of the platonistic theory of meaning depends,
in order to be conclusive, on the development
of an adequate theory of meaning along the
lines suggested in the above discussion of the
principles concerning meaning and use. Even if
such a Wittgensteinian theory did not lead to
the rejection of classical logic, it would be of
great interest in itself.” (Prawitz 1977)

12. Gentzen e
Significado via Prova
“The introductions represent, as it were, the
‘definitions’ of the symbols concerned, and
the eliminations are no more, in the final
analysis, than the consequences of these
definitions.” (Investigations into Logical
Deduction, 1934)
sexta-feira, 6 de março de 15
13. Witgenstein e
Provas como Significado
“I once said: ‘If you want to know what a
mathematical proposition says, look at what
its proof proves’. Now is there not both truth
and falsehood in this? For is the sense, the
point, of a mathematical proposition really
clear as soon as we can follow the proof?”

language” (Philosophical Investigations)

15. Wittgenstein e
“consequencias”
“One learns the meaning of ‘all’ by learning that ‘fa’
follows from ‘(x).fx’.” (Tractatus)
“The possibility of inference from (x).fx to fa shows that
the symbol (x).fx itself has generality in it.” (Prototractatus)
“what propositions follow from a proposition must be
completely settled before that proposition can have a
sense!” (Notebooks, 1915)
“What are you telling me when you use the words . . .? What
can I do with this utterance? What consequences does it
have?” (Last Writings on the Phil. of Psych. I, late 1940s)
sexta-feira, 6 de março de 15
16. Intuição Original
“Will you think that I have gone mad if I
make the following suggestion?: The sign
(x).φx is not a complete symbol but has
meaning only in an inference of the kind:
from ⊢ φx⊃xψx.φ(a) follows ψ(a). Or more
generally: from ⊢ (x).φx.ε0(a) follows φ(a). I
am—of course—most uncertain about the
matter but something of the sort might really
be true.” (Carta a Bertrand Russell, datada

19. Gentzen, Dummett,
Prawitz, Martin-Löf
“The intuitionists explain the notion of proposition,
not by saying that a proposition is the expression
of its truth conditions, but rather by saying, in
Heyting’s words, that a proposition expresses an
expectation or an intention, and you may ask, An
expectation or an intention of what? The answer is
that it is an expectation or an intention of a proof
of that proposition. And Kolmogorov phrased
essentially the same explanation by saying that a
proposition expresses a problem or task (Ger.
Aufgabe). ”

20. Gentzen, Dummett,
Prawitz, Martin-Löf
“Soon afterwards, there appeared yet another
explanation, namely, the one given by Gentzen,
who suggested that the introduction rules for the
logical constants ought to be considered as so to
say the definitions of the constants in question, that
is, as what gives the constants in question their
meaning. What I would like to make clear is that
these four seemingly different explanations
actually all amount to the same, that is, they are
not only compatible with each other but they are
just different ways of phrasing one and the same
explanation.” (Per Martin-Löf 1985)

21. Teoria de Tipos:
Per Martin-Löf
“The difference, then, between constructive mathematics and
programming does not concern the primitive notions of the one or
the other, because they are essentially the same, but lies in the
programmer’s insistence that his programs be written in a formal
notation so that they can be read and executed by a machine,
(...)”
“What I have just said about the close connection between
constructive mathematics and programming explains why the
intuitionistic type theory, which I began to develop solely with
the philosophical motive of clarifying the syntax and
semantics of intuitionistic mathematics, may equally well be
viewed as a programming language (...)”

23. Tema em Foco:
Provas de Identidade
Uma ampla frente de pesquisa na área de fundamentos da
matemática tem sido explorada desde 2005 por matemáticos como
Vladimir Voevodsky (Medalha Fields, 2002) e Steve Awodey
(“Type Theory and
Homotopy”, preprint, 2010.)

24. Provas de Identidade
(cont.)
Motivados por um olhar sobre as igualdades
em teoria de tipos como surgindo da
existência de caminhos computacionais entre
dois objetos formais, nosso propósito é
oferecer uma nova perspectiva sobre o papel
e o poder da noção de igualdade
proposicional tal qual formalizada na
chamada interpretação funcional de Curry–
Howard. (R.deQ. & A. de Oliveira,
arXiv.org, 2011)

25. Teoria de Tipos e
Teoria da Homotopia
“Homotopy type theory is a new branch of
mathematics that combines aspects of several
different fields in a surprising way. It is based on a
recently discovered connection between homotopy
theory and type theory. It touches on topics as
seemingly distant as the homotopy groups of
spheres, the algorithms for type checking, and the
definition of weak ∞-groupoids.” (Homotopy Type
Theory, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton
Open-source book: 27 main authors. Available on
GitHub. Latest version March 2014.)
sexta-feira, 6 de março de 15
26. Provas de Identidade
(cont.)
“All of this work can be seen as an
elaboration of the following basic idea: that in
Martin-Löf type theory, a type A is analogous
to a topological space; elements a, b ∈ A to
points of that space; and elements of an
identity type p,q ∈ IdA(a,b) to paths or
homotopies p,q : a → b in A.” (B. van den Berg
and R. Garner. “Topological and simplicial
models of identity types”, ACM Transactions on
Computational Logic, Jan 2012.)

27. Provas de Identidade
(cont.)
Conexões entre provas de identidade e
homotopias:
a, b : A
p, q : IdA(a,b)
α, β : IdIdA(a,b)(p,q) (···)
Agora, considere a seguinte interpretação:
Tipos - Espaços; Termos - Mapas; a:A - pontos;
p:IdA(a,b) - caminhos; α : IdIdA(a,b)(p, q) -
homotopias

28. Interpretação
Categórica
“We propose a categorical interpretation for
this new entity, using the types as objects and
the rules of rewrites as morphisms.
Moreover, we show that our interpretation is
in accordance with some known results, like
that types have a groupoid structure.”. (A.
Ramos, R.deQ. & A.de Oliveira, Dez/2014,
arXiv.org:1412.2105)

29. Univalent Foundations of
Mathematics
“From an observation by Grothendieck:
Formalism of higher equivalences (theory
of grupoids) = Homotopy theory (theory of
shapes up to a deformation)
combined with some other ideas it leads to an
encoding of mathematics in terms of the
homotopy theory. Unlike the usual encodings
in terms of set theory this one respects
equivalences.” (V. Voevodsky, Mar/2014)
sexta-feira, 6 de março de 15
30. Teoria de Tipos:
Certificação de Provas
“Type theory as coming originally from Whitehead-Russell and
simplified and essentially extended by Ramsey (simplifying),
Church (adding lambda terms), de Bruijn (adding dependent
types), Scott (adding inductive types with recursion), Girard
(adding higher order types), Martin-Löf (showing the natural
position and power of intuitionism) all lead to proof-checking
based on type theory with successes like the full formalization of
the 4CT and the Feit-Thompson theorem by Gonthier and
collaborators and the forthcoming one of the Kepler conjecture
by Hales and collaborators.
Now, there are some difficulties with types (which someone
else may like to describe). For this reason there is work in
progress by Voevodsky and collaborators to modify this
theory.” (Henk Barendregt, 21/02/2014, Lista FOM)

31. Verificação do
Raciocínio Matemático
“The roadblock that prevented generations of
interested mathematicians and computer
scientists from solving the problem of
computer verification of mathematical
reasoning was the unpreparedness of
foundations of mathematics for the
requirements of this task.” (Vladimir
Voevodsky, Mar 2014)
