Robert Mugabe died in Singapore aged 95. He had been battling ill-health, and President Emmerson Mnangagwa told a Cabinet meeting two weeks ago that doctors had discontinued treatment.

1. Condolence Message of Former President
Thabo Mbeki.
This morning we received the sad news that H.E. Mr Robert Gabriel Mugabe, former
President of Zimbabwe has passed away. We had kept contact with him over the last few
months as he was undergoing treatment in Singapore.
We will always remember and pay tribute to President Mugabe as an outstanding fighter for
the liberation not only of the people of Zimbabwe but also all other colonially and racially
oppressed peoples.
Having begun his involvement in that struggle as a member of the ANC Youth League at Fort
Hare, he grew to become an important member of the group of Frontline States in Southern
Africa which made a sterling contribution to our own struggle for emancipation from
apartheid.
Africa as a whole will also always remember him as a principled, steadfast and courageous
Pan-Africanist. In that capacity, he stood out as a great defender of African interests, always
determined to advance the cause of the true independence and the economic emancipation of
our Continent and all its constituent countries.
Because of his passionate commitment to serve the countries of the South as a whole, he
became one of the most prominent leaders not only of the African Union but also of such
organisations of the South as the Non-Aligned Movement and the G77 + China.
I take this opportunity to convey my sincere condolences to Mme Grace Mugabe, the rest of
the Mugabe family, as well as the people and Government of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe has lost a father of the nation! As Africans, we have lost an eminent leader of our
victorious struggle for national liberation!
May that outstanding fighter for Africa’s emancipation, H.E. Robert Gabriel Mugabe, rest in
eternal peace.
Thabo Mbeki.
