Chandrabhaga are the names of single individual sage who was
the teacher of science of medicine
• All the names mentioned above are synonyms of Atreya
• Bhikshu Atreya was the Buddhist & was a reputed teacher of
“Jivaka” who worked in Takshasila University. He was not the
preceptor of Agnivesa etc
• Bhikshu Atreya & punarvasu Atreya are not one & same both
are different

• At present among the treatise written by the disciple of Atreya
are Agnivesa Samhita & Bhela Samhita are available
• In comparision with Agnivesa Samhita, Bhela Samhita was

• According to Burnell, Bhela belongs to Gandhara of
Afghanistan, as named as Gandhara Desa
• He was also known as “Bheda”
• In Grantha both “Bhela” & “Bheda” name are mentioned
