Catheter Care Training Courses are essential training courses for people in the health care sector planning and/or caring/providing care to individuals requiring a urinary catheter. The course will provide a useful revision for qualified nurses and help them to give better, more effective catheter care management. Catheter's are currently the leading cause of healthcare acquired infections many of which could have been avoided if best practice guidelines had been followed. the course follows the Royal College of Nursing's Guidelines for Catheter care. the course lasts for three hours and can be delivered at a number of locations best suited to your staff or at one of our training centres. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion. The course can also be tailored to the specific training needs of your staff.

1. Catheter Care
Course Description:
This is an essential course for health care providers who are planning and providing care for
individuals requiring a urinary catheter. It also provides helpful revision for qualified nurses
responsible for over - seeing effective continence management.
Indwelling urinary catheters are currently the leading cause of healthcare acquired
infections, many of which would be avoided if best practice guidelines had been followed.
As well as discussing alternatives to indwelling catheterisation, the course covers in detail
the Royal College of Nursing’s Best Practice in Catheter Care guidelines. Although this
training can be delivered as a “stand alone” 3 hour course, we highly recommended that
it is delivered in conjunction with our 3 hour “Effective Continence Management” course.

Explain what a urinary catheter is, why it would be used and when it should not be used
Explain why the male anatomy makes catheterisation more difficult in males than females
Discuss the different catheters available and in what situations they would be used
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of catheters
Discuss in detail the 10 elements of the Royal College of Nursing’s “Best Practice in Catheter
Care guidelines”
• Give an overview of the emotional, social and sexual implications of having an indwelling
catheter

Assessment:
This interactive course utilises a number of quizzes, question and answer sessions and
group activities. Participants will be expected to fully engage with these activities in order
to enhance their learning experience. The trainer will carry out an on-going assessment of
participant’s understanding andlearning throughout the session.
