Dementia Care Training Courses are designed for people who have little or no knowledge of working with people who have Dementia or people looking to refresh their skills. The course will help develop knowledge and understanding of Dementia and then giving the tools to know how to provide care, support and ways to communicate with people who suffer from this condition. Participants will be taught what Dementia is, causes, signs and symptoms, seeing the condition from the perspective of someone who has it, understand person-centred care and finally how to establish good communication with family carers of people with Dementia and how to involve them in the on-going care process. This course lasts for 6 hours and all participants will gain a certificate of attendance at the end of the day. The course can be held at one of our training centres or a place more convenient for your staff. The course can also be tailor made for your specific requirements.
1. Dementia Care
Course Description:
This session is aimed at staff who have little or no knowledge or experience of working with
people who have dementia and those looking to refresh their knowledge and skills. The
session aims to help participants develop their knowledge and understanding of dementia
and ways of communicating with and providing practical care and support to people who
have dementia.
Participants will be introduced to the key messages in the Dementia Strategy –
Understand what the term dementia means, know about the different causes of dementia,
signs and symptoms. Understand what it means to have dementia from the perspective of
someone who has dementia, know about the factors that can make life difficult for people
with dementia. Learn ways of communicating effectively with people who have dementia
and understand what person-centred care for people with dementia means in practice.
Learn practical ways of providing care and support to people with dementia in their care
setting and build and maintain relationships with the individual, their family and other
carers. Finally to establish good communication with family carers of people with dementia
and involve them in their care.
Course Outline:
• Looking at the forms of dementia, some of the signs and symptoms
• Looking at how actions of people with dementia can be misunderstood because dementia
is not visible externally
• The importance of focusing on what the person can do, rather than what they can’t do
• How learning about the person’s past can help to give that person the best possible
support, respect and their own identity. It can also help staff understand the person’s
behaviour, even if challenging their behaviour is a way of communicating
• Depression in Dementia sufferers
• How family carers play an important role in the person’s care and why there is a need for
good communication
• Looking at different forms of speech and language that may need to be used to
communicate and the importance of non verbal communication for someone with more
advanced dementia and how to maintain the communication
• How person–centred care can be put into practice, once you know the person past and
present
