Course Description:
Dysphagia is important for staff working in Health and Social Care settings if they are
working with service users with this condition. This course will explore the ways in which
we could assist the service user with their eating and drinking and it explains some of the
causes, signs and symptoms to look for.
This course is designed to assist in giving person centred care. This is a theory course and
students will be asked to take part in group work and open discussions.

What is Dysphagia?
How swallowing works / The 3 stages of swallowing
Causes
Inflammatory muscle disease / central nervous system / Reflux esophagitis / Alcohol,
tobacco and drug abuse
Symptoms
Difficulty swallowing / Pain and discomfort / Lower chest pain after eating / Angina like
chest pain after swallowing / Regurgitation of food or liquid / Feeling of fullness in throat
Things To Do
Positioning when eating / Dining environment / Amount of food / Rate of eating / Saliva
management / Food consistency
