Why training your staff is important … even if they leave! talks about why you should think about training your staff. It gives helpful points to make sure that staff retention stays high and encourages you to think about the positives of training.

2. At Pathway we always hear the question ‘what if we
train them and the leave?’. Businesses are often
conscience that if they give their staff the best training
they will stay for the training and then leave for better
jobs taking their skills with them meaning that the
organisation will have to start the training process all
over again.
What if they leave?
3. As true as this question is and the reasoning
behind it just think:
‘What if we don’t train staff
and they STAY!?’
4. Make sure that you offer the best training so that your
staff feel valued! Staff are less likely to leave a place
where they feel valued and part of something. To get
the best out of someone you need to be willing to
invest in them whatever the outcome.
Training is an investment
in someone
5. Create a higher position
for them
Whether there is an increase of responsibility, better
pay or bonuses or a better job title make the training
something to work for your staff. If they know that they
have something to work for they will perform to their
best and value that you have invested and believed in
their ability enough. Never underestimate the power of
incentive to keep a member of staff on. If you are
offering them the best, they will perform their best.
6. You need them to be
trained
Training might be a bit of a waste if that person
leaves however you need them to be trained to
make your business successful. Sometimes it is just
something that you need to accept.
7. Make the training a
team effort
If you are training more than one member of staff
group them together. This will make them feel part of
something and a team. In these teams promote team
spirit and friendship. When people feel connected to
each other they are more likely to want to stay in
employment with these people.
8. Asking staff what training would help them to
perform better will fix their eyes on their current job,
give them job specific skills and focus on how they
can improve within their current job.
Ask staff what training
they would like
9. Choose people who are
worth investing in
It’s important to go with your instinct. If you feel like
someone would do well with some training in a certain
area, that someone feels under-valued or someone has
really proved themselves and you can see their potential
to grow within the business talk to them about training.
This ‘hand-picked’ feel will make them feel special and
they will respond well to the training and want to give
back for you believing in them.
