3. Background
We tracked an amount of 609 comments over a period of 3 days (08 – 10
August 2012) with regards to National Women’s Day.
National Women's Day is an annual public holiday in South Africa on the of
9th August. This commemorates the national march of 20 000 women
(all races and ages) on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation
that required African persons to carry the "pass", special
identification documents which restricted an African's freedom of movement
during the apartheid era.

• 609 people in the country commented on Women’s Day during the
reporting period.

Negative: 11
Majority of the comments were well wishes to South African women and the
celebration of Team SA at the Olympics.
10. Love to the Olympics
The South African ladies and the team who participated in the Olympics also
received messages from home in celebration of the Women’s Day.
11. The negative side…
• 11 negative comments were posted.
• The comments varied from complaints about the broadcast being boring, women
being reckless on the dedicated day as well as general opinions.
13. Events
Annually there is a celebration held where the President gives a speech in
celebration and commemoration of Women’s Day, the event is broadcast for
those who can’t attend.
The theme for 2012 was: 56 years of women united against poverty, inequality
and unemployment. The commemoration of the National Women’s Day took
place in Tshwane, Gauteng (Union Buildings) on 9 August 2012.

• This case study was put together to see what people said and think about Women’s Day.
• The categories were listed to show how many people still refer to the history of the day
and how many people see it as just another public holiday.
• Overall the day was celebrated, which proves that it is still a relevant topic in South Africa
and the celebration of women is still alive till this day.
