Preliminary Evaluation
What were you asked to do?
The taskthatwe were giventoocomplete wastocreate ashortfilminwhichwerecordaconversation
betweentwopeople.Whilstdoingthis,we had to ensure that we useda varietyof shots in orderto
make the filmlookasprofessionalaspossible.We were putinthe positionof the directorandwe had
the responsibility of making sure that the actors did the right things. For example, I told one of my
actors to push the door with their right hand and this means that they would be consistent and it
would make the editing a lot easier for after the filming.
3 techniques or rules you learnt about during the preliminary task
One rule that I leant about when filming is the 180-degree rule. This goes hand in hand with shot/
reverse shot.The 180-degree rulemeansthatyoudraw betweenthe twopeopleandyoucannotpass
this line with the camera. You will usuallydo an over the shoulder shot to look at the person that is
talking.If youlookoversomeone’srightshoulder,thenyouwouldhavetolookovertheother person’s
leftshoulderasitmakesitlookmore realistic.Thiswasonlyapplicablewhen recordingthe film.After
the filming,youhave to editthe shots togetherand have them seamlesslyfittogether. Thisiscalled
match on action. So,forexample,if youwere tohave someonepushingthe dooropenfromone shot
andthenchanginghalfwaythentheyhave toopenitthe sameway.Inordertomake themseamlessly
fit together, you have to edit them as though the shot didn’t change so there can’t be a jump in the
cut unless if you want there to be.
List three things that went well during the filming/editing process
During the filming process, the actors used in the filmwere extremely efficient and they listenedto
the instructions I used which made it easier for me when I was editing. The editing software that I
used did not corrupt which made it easy for me as then I did not have to go back and do my editing
again. The camera that I usedwhenI was recordingalsodidnot corrupt so we did not have to re-do
the recordingsand alsoit was of a highqualitywhichmeantthat the playbackof the videowasgood
quality.
List three things that could have been improved in these stages
Whenwe were recording,there wasbackgroundnoiseof otherpeopleinsomeshotsbutothersthere
was no background noise and this meant that some scenes sounddifferent to others. In additionto
this, the camera audio quality wasn’t very good and somethingwe could do in order to ensure that
we heareach person clearlyiswe couldattach a personal micto the actors. In orderto improve the
quality of my short film, I could have added a few extra effects, thiswould add an extra element to
the film.Forexample,if Iwantedtoadda horror feel tothe filmthenIwouldmake the scenesdarker
as lowkeylightingconnotesa scary feeling.Inorderto try and be more efficient,Icouldhave taken
more shots in order to try and make it perfect. However, time played an issue in this.

A few ideas came to mind when I started to edit my short film. For example, when I figured out you
couldspeedthingsup wheneditingIgot the ideaof usingthe time lapsesof the landscape.Alsothe
point of view is something that I would like to implement when making my film opening as it makes
the viewerfeel like theyare inthe filmandthisgivesthe filmamuch more personal feelingthanjust
following them around with other shots.

So,forexample,if youwere tohave someonepushingthe dooropenfromone shot andthenchanginghalfwaythentheyhave toopenitthe sameway.Inordertomake themseamlessly fit together, you have to edit them as though the shot didn’t change so there can’t be a jump in the cut unless if you want there to be. List three things that went well during the filming/editing process During the filming process, the actors used in the filmwere extremely efficient and they listenedto the instructions I used which made it easier for me when I was editing. The editing software that I used did not corrupt which made it easy for me as then I did not have to go back and do my editing again. The camera that I usedwhenI was recordingalsodidnot corrupt so we did not have to re-do the recordingsand alsoit was of a highqualitywhichmeantthat the playbackof the videowasgood quality. In additionto this, the camera audio quality wasn’t very good and somethingwe could do in order to ensure that we heareach person clearlyiswe couldattach a personal micto the actors. In orderto improve the quality of my short film, I could have added a few extra effects, thiswould add an extra element to the film.Forexample,if Iwantedtoadda horror feel tothe filmthenIwouldmake the scenesdarker as lowkeylightingconnotesa scary feeling.Inorderto try and be more efficient,Icouldhave taken more shots in order to try and make it perfect.
