Definition of National IncomeIn common parlance, national income means the total value of goods and services produced annually in a country. In the words of Pigou, “ National income is that part of objective income of the community ,including of course income derived from abroad which can be measured in money ‘’From the modern point of view , Simon Kuznets has defined national income as ‘’ the net output of commodities and services flowing during the year from the country’s productive system in the hands of the ultimate consumers.
Concepts of National IncomeThere are a number of concepts pertaining to national income. For instance, Gross National Product, Net National Product, Net National product at factor cost, Net Domestic Product at Factor cost, Personal Income, Disposable Income, and Real Income. One by one these concepts are discussed below………………………………………Gross National Product( GNP) GNP is the total measure of the flow of goods and services at market value resulting from current production during a  year
in a country, including net income from abroad. GNP includes four types of final goods and services:(1) consumers’ goods and services to satisfy the immediate wants of the people;(2) gross private domestic investment in capital    goods consisting of fixed capital formation, residential construction and inventories of finished and unfinished goods;(3) goods and services produced by the government; and (4) net exports of goods and services, i.e., the difference between value of exports and imports of
Goods and services, known as net income from abroad.In this concept there are certain factors that have to be taken into consideration. 1.current prices and constant prices.2. market price of only final products should be taken into consideration to avoid double counting.3. goods and services rendered free of charge are not included in GNP.4. transactions which do not contribute arise from the produce of current year or which do not contribute in any way to production , are not
5. The profits earned or losses incurred on account of changes in capital assets as a result of fluctuations in market prices, are not included in the GNP if they are not responsible for current production or economic activity.6. income earned through illegal activities is not included in the GNP.
