1. ADJECTIVES
An adjective is a word used to
describe a noun or pronoun a more
specific meaning.
Adjectives modify nouns and
pronouns by providing information
that answers any of the following
questions about the noun and
pronoun: What kind? Which one?
How many? or How much?
2. EXAMPLES:
• Hot onions ( What kind of onions?)
• That book ( Which book?)
• Seventeen marbles ( How many
marbles?)
• More exercise ( How much
exercise?)
3. These examples show the usual
location of an adjective---preceding
a noun. Sometimes, however, the
adjective is located after a noun it
modifies.
• Example
• The bicycle looked new.
4. An adjective that modifies a
pronoun usually follows the
pronoun, but, on occasion, it can
precede the pronoun.
• After : We were sweaty after our
workout.
• Before: Sweaty after workout, we
took quick showers.
5. Articles
• The three most common
adjectives are the articles. A and
an are the indefinite articles;
they refer to any one of a class of
nouns. The, the definite article,
refers to a specific nouns.
• INDEFINITE: a contest, an
opportunity
• DEFINITE: the winner
6. Nouns used as adjectives
• Occasionally, words that are
usually nouns will function as
adjectives. A noun used as an
adjective will modify another noun
and answer the question What
kind? or the question Which one?
8. Proper adjectives
• Adjectives can be proper like
nouns. Proper adjectives are
proper nouns used as an
adjectives or adjectives formed
from proper nouns. They modify
other nouns and usually begin
with a capital letter.

of more than one word. Most

• Used with plural nouns:
Both, few, many, several
Few people attended the concert.
19. Indefinite pronouns
• Used with singular or plural nouns:
• All, any, more, most, other, some.
• Give me some water, please.
• I received some gifts.
20. Verbs used as adjectives
• Verbs used as adjectives usually
end in ing or ed
Examples:
• The rippling water felt refreshing
to them.
• The washed clothes were neatly
folded.
