3. INTRODUCTION
Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, biological
molecules, or other harmful materials into Earth's
atmosphere, causing diseases, death to humans, damage to
other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or
the natural or built environment.
According to The Air (Prevention and Control of
Pollution) Act, 1981, “Air pollution is the presence of
any solid, liquid, or gaseous substances in the
atmosphere in such concentration as may be or tend to
be injurious to human beings or other living creatures
or plants or property or environment”.
5. The substances which are responsible for causing air pollution are called air pollutants.
Air pollutants can be categorized by various means: Based on

8. CONTROLLING MEASURES OFAIR POLLUTION
1. Use of unleaded petrol
2. Using fuels with low sulphur and ash
content
3. Promotion of use of public transport
4. Sensitive locations (hospitals, schools,
playgrounds etc.) should not be located
along the busy streets
5. Vegetation cover should be increased
along the roadside, busy traffic
intersection points, and on the road
dividers.
