2. What is Dental Day and Dental Hygiene Day?
 a collaborative, intraprofessional dental event where high risk groups are invited to receive free
advice and dental care based on their individual needs
 As many barriers as possible are eliminated to increase utilization
 Try to encourage prevention and commitment to oral health
 Barriers: finances, transportation, childcare, employment, fear, social support,
language, culture, education

4. Timelines
 2010: Invited to participate with the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region and Dental Health Educators to
provide oral hygiene education to members of the Regina Food Bank
 2011: SIAST Dental Program asked to be the lead on the oral health care for the event
 2012: Funding made available to support DH services at SIAST Dental Clinic and first year of Dental Day
 2013-2015: Dental Day grew each year in volunteers, patients seen and treatment completed
 2016: Introduction of Dental Hygiene Day

 Sinclair Dental: supplies for Dental Hygiene Day, autoclave and bags
 Saskatchewan Polytechnic: use of facility and free parking

 Costco, Safeway, Sobeys ($50)

9.  3 restoration kits
 1 extraction kit
 2+ high and low speed handpieces with couplers
 Any unique burs or items you may prefer to use
 A list of the materials and instruments provided will be sent in advance
 Ex. Etchant, Gauze, Curing Lights, Wedges, Matrices
 Dental Assistant – option of bringing one or being assigned
 Provided: Dental Assistant, clinic runner(s), radiographs, disposable supplies

 Provided: Dental Assistant, clinic runner(s), radiographs, disposable supplies
 Treatments: extractions, restorations, endodontics
 One patient / hour; Clients seen before if charting and radiographs required
 Provider creates the treatment plan + complete documentation

12. Further Treatment Required?
 All clients are followed up after care
 Some dentists have completed the care in their own offices
 Clients are encouraged to book in the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Dental Clinic
 See a dentist in private practice

13. Dental Hygiene Program
 Presently the Dental Hygiene Program is a 2 year course that runs from the end of August until the first
week of June
 Length: 76 weeks:
Year 1 - 38 weeks; Year 2 - 38 weeks
 September, 2017 will be the first intake for the 3 year Program
 Year 1- Anatomy and Physiology, English (Literature, Critical Reading/Writing), Statistics, Psychology, Sociology,
Chemistry/Organic Chemistry,
 Year 2 & 3- Dental Hygiene specific classes and more clinical experience

14.  Accreditation in May, 2017
 New Saskatchewan Polytechnic Academic Model
 Inclusion of employability skills
 A commitment to include indigenous content within curricula
 An increased focus on applied research and scholarship
 Admission requirements and processes that provide informed options and support for applicant
 A move from cohort-based programs toward more flexible delivery of courses

16. How are our students doing?
 25/26 students passed the National Board Exam last year
 We are at least 10% above the National average in most categories
 Employers request SIAST/Saskatchewan Polytechnic grads
 SDHA continues to increase in numbers
