1- Identify main idea from TOPIC
  SENTENCE .
2- Identify SUPPORTING DETAILS .
3- Disregard unimportant
  information.
4- Simplify the important
  information.

Example of a paragraph:                  Topic sentence

 There are 2500 different kinds of palm trees, and
 the most useful kinds are date palms.
 Good date palms provide 400 kilos of dates every
 year for 70 years.               2 supporting ideas
 Dates are delicious and healthy, and you can keep
 them longer than other fruit.
 Apples and oranges are not good after a week in hot
 weather, but dates are good for many weeks.


            Unimportant information
The paragraph’s summary:
 The most important kind of palm
 trees is the date palms. Because dates
 are very tasty, good for the health, and
 unlike other fruits they can be
 conserved for long periods.
Now read the second
paragraph in your
students books page 96
and underline the main
idea and the supporting
details.
Now work in groups to
reorder the following
sentences to get a
coherent summary of the
second paragraph.
 He was the first person who crossed
 the Atlantic ocean.

 He was the first explorer who sailed
 towards the west to land on the East
 Indies with the queen’s consent.

 Christopher Columbus was an
 English explorer.
