The Navy conducted a sediment removal action at Site 27 as part of an installation restoration program at Moffett Field. Sediments containing contaminants like PCBs, pesticides and metals were excavated from drainage channels and disposed of off-site. Over 68,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed. Confirmation sampling showed target cleanup goals were met, except for selenium in underlying clays. A technical memorandum determined the selenium was naturally occurring based on historical data. The Navy is working with agencies to finalize the remedial action completion report and close out the site.

As a result of “encouraging visual observations“ during its phase-1- and phase-2 sampling programs, Core Assets Corp. last week announced the expansion (quadruplication to 1083 km2) of its 100% owned, royalty-free Blue Property at the northern edge of the Golden Triangle in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The news was followed by a Rockstone report highlighting the chances of making a CRD (Carbonate Replacement Deposit) discovery and explaining the significance of CRDs in comparison with other types of polymetallic deposits such as VMS and MVT. Today, Core Assets Corp. released assays from its recently completed phase-1 grab-sampling program, when 247 grab samples were collected.

This project examines the rate of erosion in Little Harbour, on the south-east coast of the Northumberland Strait. Coastlines were digitized using a series of airphoto mosaics from the 1970s to the present. The rate of change between digitized lines is measured using a script developed at the AGRG. Attributes are added to the data, classifying it by landform, waterbody, and angle. Results are examined to determine the overall rate of erosion, as well as to determine areas of increased vulnerability.

Dr Ziqiu Xue, Chief Researcher of the CO2 Storage Group at Japan’s Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) will lead a Global CCS Institute webinar to review and discuss microseismic monitoring at CCS storage sites. The secure storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep geological formations requires a sufficient overlying cap rock layer to contain the CO2 within the formation. Injection of CO2 increases the formation pressure in the target reservoir. This will decrease the effective pressure and will also lead to geomechanical deformation of the rocks. Therefore, to ensure safety of storage, the CO2 injection must be controlled to maintain integrity of the cap rock. This webinar will give a simple review on microseismic monitoring results observed at onshore CO2 injection sites such as Weyburn, Canada and Lacq, France. Case study results from the Nagaoka pilot site in Japan will also be introduced, including the field survey results after an earthquake hit the area during CO2 injection.

Seismic attributes are being used more and more often in the reservoir characterization and interpretation processes. The new software and computer’s development allows today to generate a large number of surface and volume attributes. They proved to be very useful for the facies and reservoir properties distribution in the geological models, helping to improve their quality in the areas between the wells and areas without wells. The seismic attributes can help to better understand the stratigraphic and structural features, the sedimentation processes, lithology variations, etc. By improving the static geological models, the dynamic models are also improved, helping to better understand the reservoirs’ behavior during exploitation. As a result, the estimation of the recoverable hydrocarbon volumes becomes more reliable and the development strategies will become more successful.
