The first University of Divinity Teaching for Learning Day, held 6 November 2013 in Melbourne focussed on Good Practice in Higher/Theological Education. This second session addressed principles of Good Practice, derived from Chickering, Gamson and Ehrmann, and asked how these applied to the University's Colleges, especially as more Colleges embrace online support or delivery for their units and courses. Forums, Skype and Copyright were also addressed.

In a world where knowledge is more a verb than a noun how do we foster deep learning in our students? Good questions cause thinking. Unfortunately, many of the questions regularly asked in classrooms focus on knowledge as a noun. This presentation will explore the effective use of thinking and learning tools in the classroom. We will work together to model teaching practices that lead to students co-constructing a networked (real world) rather than hierarchical (artificial) understanding of their world regardless of grade level or discipline. Participants leave this workshop with a toolkit of research based questioning and thinking strategies they can begin using with their students tomorrow.

In this workshop, James will deliver a short presentation introducing some of the main issues at stake with regards to integrating reflective practice into whole school improvement. Participants will share their school’s own experiences with others. The main learning outcome of the session will be to have an understanding of how schools might tackle some of the complexities involved in leading reflective practice amongst staff. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
