311 is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska formed in 1988. They have released 10 studio albums and are known for blending alternative rock, rap rock, reggae and other genres. The band takes its name from a police code for indecent exposure, not as an abbreviation for KKK as some believe. Their self-titled 1995 album went triple platinum and launched their mainstream success with hits like "Down" and "All Mixed Up." The band celebrates 311 Day annually on March 11 in honor of their name.

2. What is 311?...
It’s an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. To
date, 311 has released ten studio albums, one live
album, four compilation albums, four EPs and four
DVDs. 311 is generally known as an alternative rock
band, but it is also classified as rap rock, rap
metal, funk rock, funk metal, reggae and jazz fusion.
6. What’s in a name?
The origin of the band’s name has
often been known to it’s old school
fan base. It’s often said that it stands
for KKK. They say this because “K” is
the 11th letter of the alphabet so 3 K’s
would mean KKK. That couldn’t be any
further from the truth. It’s actually a
police code for indecent exposure. A
member of the band was ticketed for
urinating in public and that was the
code used. There music speaks of
peace, positivity and unity and it’s sad
that people try to say these things
about the band.

Breakthrough…
In 1995, 311 released what was to be
their biggest selling CD, the self-titled
311 (also known as The Blue Album).
The first single "Don't Stay Home" was
a modest success, reaching #29 on
Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.
But the follow-up single
"Down", which was released 14
months after the album, received
heavy airplay on mainstream radio and
the accompanying music video was on
MTV's rotation. The song hit #1 on the
Modern Rock chart. The band made
their network television debut on Late
Night with Conan O'Brien on August
23. The third single, "All Mixed Up,“
enjoyed almost identical
success, reaching #4 on the Modern
Rock chart. These singles propelled the
album to platinum status in 1996. The
album eventually went triple-
platinum. They also appeared on Late
Show with David Letterman playing
"Down".
8. 311 day
On March 11, 2000, 311 began
celebrating an unofficial holiday of
their own creation, which they called
311 Day. The band chose the date
based on its numerical association
with their own name: March is the
third month of the year, so March 11 is
written as 3/11. Every year on March
11, the band performs an extended
concert for thousands of their fans.
9. Personal Experience
I’ve been a fan of 311 since 1993. The
first time I saw them was at Ziggy’s in
Winston-Salem. The Charlotte area is
normally always a stop on their tours. I
just saw them last week for the 39th
time. I’ll continue to go as long as they
keep touring!
10. 311 & Social Media…
